Dogs leg problem?

Over christmas in a drunken state i fell over and landed on my dogs leg ,he yelped and could not walk without holding his back leg in the air,me and my friends made a splint out of his drum sticks ,news paper and sticky tape ,i thought we made a great job but this morning his leg is really smelling bad and upon opening up the rapping it has gone rotten. My question is this, where should i cut the leg off from above he's knee or right at the top near his hip ? will a jig saw do the job and what blade should i use (metal or wood) i have got skin coloured cotton to sew him up your help will be most helpfull

Dogs leg problem?
Forget this lot Monkey.

Even I can see your looking for a serious answer to this problem so here in my capacity as a part time vet surgeon is my free advise. Take off the wrapping to examine it. Give the leg a sharp pull to see how much pulls off, This would be the rottenist part. Now saw off about an inch above this and use some Supa glue to patch it up as best you can. Also as I have found out, there are some really good dolls legs about and if you sew one of these on in place of the leg with the skin coloured cotton, ( nice touch by the way ),sometimes it doesnt notice to the dog. You may find it just limps around for about a fortnight yelping, but after that it stops. Anyway, happy leg amputating. We all started somewhere

.

P.S. Use Glade air freshener on the dog. Does'nt smell so bad then.
Reply:Obviously, if such a thing had really happened, you should take your dog to a veterinary hospital. However, it is clear that your story is a fabrication.
Reply:Take the dog to the vet and don't try any jigsaw stuff yourself. The vet will be able to treat the wound and set any broken bones. And drink responsibly.
Reply:What a monkey you are!
Reply:Cut at the base of the neck with the bluntest, rustiest saw you can find. That'd be your neck, mate, not the dogs.
Reply:Please, please kindly take the dog IMMEDIATELY to a vet.
Reply:Well, if you are in California, expect to do up to four years in prison for felonious animal cruelty. I hope you will become " stuff ". Ask your " jocker " in the gray bar hotel, what that means.

My dog scratches because of scabies?

He has been to the vet 3 times, takes pills, gets a bath with special shampoo weekly, and gets a weekly shot, but he is still scratching.

Any suggestions?

Also- any suggestions for something else i can put on his skin to make him stop scratching?

And finally- how are contagious is dog-dog scabies? I live in Taiwan, where there are thousands of stray dogs, do i have to worry about my dog constantly having this problem?

Fyi- he is a boxer

My dog scratches because of scabies?
I guess the weekly shot is ivermectin, please make sure it is becasue it is the most effective treatment. Your dog could still be scratching even if the scabies is dead because of skin inflammation or secondary skin infection, so please check with your vet that these issues are being adressed.

If your dog gets ivermectin regularly you shouldnt have to worry too much of this problem reappearing, but your dog shouldnt be in contact with stray dogs anyway, he could be exposed to worse than scabies! I hope he is vaccined against rabies and other infectious diseases!
Reply:check another vet or ask you vet if it is still is normal.
Reply:i think you could visit a pet store and ask a sales person about a cream to rub on them im not sure about the stray dog thing because i live in canada
Reply:sounds like the mange
Reply:Well, scabies are VERY hard to get rid of, (I know). They are little bugs that bury right under the skin and they are a pain in the butt. Scabies are HIGHLY contagious, even to humans. If you touch him you need to wash with antibacterial soap every spot he touches you on. I have had them and I got them from my dog, it took 6 months to get rid of them completely. If you start itching, you can tell if they are scabies by looking where it itches, use a magnifying glass, it will look like a pimple or a ant bite, you know how they look a little bubble, if it is scabies, you will see a grey spot in the middle of the bubble, if you see this go to the doctor or hospital because they wont go away on their own they will spread and get worse. good luck.

What is wrong with my dog!?

My dog is 2 years old, and she is a pug. All of a sudden she has began to be all mopey, and she walks really slow (she kinda looks tired or dead), ever time I let her out to go outside, she is all slow and wants to stay behind. And also she has a problem with her skin it is all black and sticky, and it smells really gross, I tried to give her a bath but it didn't work, is my dog dieing?

What is wrong with my dog!?
That skin thing happened to my aunts dog when it got old. I think he got baths with medical shampoos and also took oral medication for it.

You need to go to the vet, she is probably seriously ill and needs expert medical attention right away!
Reply:You could always take her to the vet and find out what's wrong.. I have never in my life had a dog with skin that was black and sticky and smelled really gross.. It's sounds like a problem to me, but I am not a vet...
Reply:Why are you on here asking if your dog is dieing?! take the poor thing to the vet!
Reply:Take the poor thing to the Vet
Reply:I have never heard of black sticky smelling skin problems before.

You should really take your dog to the vet before you regret waiting.

Reply:The poor dog's obviously got some problem with her health, and the only person who can help you with health-related issues is a vet. Really, there's no other solution. Take her to see your vet, and don't put it off.

No dog that's just 2 years old should be looking tired or dead, and the skin-problem could be the cause of it, or a symptom of whatever is wrong with her. You can't afford to wait.
Reply:OMG! poor little pug! Yes i agree with everyone else take it to the vet.And did you know pugs have the most health problems out of all dog breeds!
Reply:ask your VET
Reply:very much time to see the vet !

Dog Food Help?

My dog has #2 problems and I need to change his diet. He is a Mini Poodle 1 years old. And right now he is on Canned Ol'Roy since my aunt has money issues but I offered to buy them food. So yea.

So I went to Wal*Mart with my dad to look at food. I want a HUGE bag of dog food that you can make moiste. I don't care if the dog's wont eat it b/c it's too dry. Once they start starving they'll eat it. (That sounds bad, but I don't mean it like that). But I looked at all the 40 lb bags and the first ingrediant was Corn. Even Ol' Roy cans have meat as first ingrident.

It CAN'T be organic. Nope I'm against it. But I would like it to be fairly affordable and good for the skin. What would you recommend? Oh and I have to be able to drive to a store to get it, no internet only food....

Dog Food Help?
Go to both sites

dogfoodanalysis.com

dogfoodproject.com

using both sites is better than just using one. it would be better if you have a mental list of the products available there so you can check the brands out on the two sites. just make sure the formula is suitable for your dog.

I use Canidae and Solid Gold as they are the only good ones available here and I switch brands after every bag. If Innova Evo Red meat is available here I would use that as well.
Reply:well, organic doesnt really have any guidleines in the dog food world, so even if it says it, doesnt mean it is.

but my suggestion, if u want something u can buy in the store, is Blue. its sold in petsmart. has no corn, wheat, soy, beef, or by-products, or artificial preservatives. its great for the skin, and digestion. it may look pricey, but b/c of the higher quality ingredients, your dog does not need to eat as much as a crappy food might require. Blue can be fed dry or moistened with warm water or low sodium broth.
Reply:First, you aren't going to get any sort of decent food from Wal-mart. It is all pure junk.

Second, You do NOT want the biggest bag you can get. Food looses it's nutritional value rather quickly after it's open. You want absolutely no more than your dog will eat in a 3 month period.

Third, this dog needs to see a vet if it is having regular proplems with '#2'.

If you want a good food then go to your local pet store and look at the foods. You want the top three ingredients to be meat. No 'by products'. You don't want any corn or wheat. Expect to pay for what you get.
Reply:Don't shop in Walmart for the dog food! Get on the phone and look in the phone book and start calling your local feed and grain businesses. You want to get something like Candidae, Nature's Recipe, Taste of the Wild, Solid Gold. Those are all pretty good foods but you usually find them at the feed and grain businesses or PetSmart or PetCo. I would call and ask before heading out to purchase, that way you don't make a wasted trip.
Reply:anywhere but walmart please.. olroy is the worst food in america

food brands have store locators
Reply:Like others said skip walmart they have all junky foods make a trip to a petstore or you can even go online and order some dog food

Canidae is a very good dog food other good dogs foods are solid gold

They can be pricey but its really good for a dog
Reply:If you want to find a store that sells Canidae you should go here and enter your area code.

Anything food you can find in a Walmart or Grocery store is pure junk. sorry to break it to you.And you say meat is the first ingridient. you mean probobly meat by products witch is ushually dogs and cats put to sleep in shelters. I reccomend this food.

http://www.canidae.com/dogs/all_life_sta...

It's so affordable being a natural food. 8 dollars for 5 pounds!
Reply:Since you have a miniature poodle, then even though dog food that is healthy is more expensive, it is not so expensive when feeding it a better quality food.

Nature's Recipe is a better quality food without corn or wheat, no artificial dyes and it comes canned but the canned is not runny or with gravy. So you might want to get their canned food and put out half portion of that food then the other portion of dry food- feeding twice a day. YOu can get really cheap snap on covers for the cans so you can store them in your fridge without them spoiling.

Check dates on cans and bags of food for optimum freshness.

I sprinkle Brewer's Yeast over my dogs food. That's great for skin and coat. I also give them occasional plain yogurt.
Reply:Go to a pet store and buy Nutro Max it is cheap but will last a long time. It is important that he should eat dry food.

My dog has itchy ears, could it be from Simplicef?

My chihuahua has been on antibiotics (Simplicef) for a few days now just for a minor skin rash which looks to be totally gone but his Rx hasn't finished yet. Now he's itching his ears quite a bit and shaking his head a lot, I checked his ears out and I don't see any mites or sores at all but there is a little "crusty" stuff on them. I'm wondering if this could be a reaction to his medication? Should I let him finish the antibiotics or just stop them and take a trip back to the vet ASAP? He doesnt have any other symptoms and seems totally fine other than the problem with his ears, so I have no idea what this is from or if its from his medication at all. If any of you have had this problem with your dog (especially if s/he was on Simplicef) please I appreciate any feedback. Thanks

My dog has itchy ears, could it be from Simplicef?
my dog was having the same affect with simplicef in quit giving my dog the meds for good

cost alot of money $120.00 for 100 tabets

Animal safety studies: well tolerated at up to 40x normal daily oral dose.

In animal safety studies, SIMPLICEF (cefpodoxime proxetil) was well tolerated at up to 40x the normal daily oral dose for 13 weeks in adult dogs and 28 days in puppies (18-23 days of age).

Safety has been demonstrated in dogs for up to six months of daily therapy.

but after all that we fianly found out from the second trip to the vet he had mites real bad in was bleeding from his ear cause of the infection in well we got it taken care of now rusty does not itch are scratch his ears any more
Reply:Maybe it's from Simplicef. Consult a vet tech. Or you can just treat your dog with GOOD food. If that doesn't work, really consult to a vet.
Reply:It could be ear infections. I know that he is on antibiotics, but some of them only work for certain things just like human meds. My Doberman had a few of them and he would still keep getting them if i didn't clean them all the time. I took him to the vet and he showed me how to clean them and gave me stuff to do it with and said to figure out how often i have to do it. It took a while to figure out how often he needed them cleaned i started every week and then i moved to every 1 1/2 weeks and so on, but now i know that it is around every 3 weeks. I could probably do it once a month, but then he may end up with another ear infection and i don't want to take that chance. I would take him to a vet just to make sure. If it does turn out to be just an ear infection it may not sound serious, but you know how you fill when you have an ear infection.

edit: I forgot to say what my dog does when he gets them. He scratches at his ear or ears depending on if it went to both ears. Then he would shake his head often. It smells really bad so you can check to see if it smells. The vet showed me that. Also sometimes you can see the wax (dark brown almost black) on the inside of his ear. He also dug at it so much (at night when i was sleeping) that he had scabs on the inside of his ear. Their ears get really itchy when they get ear infections.
Reply:The symptoms u describe certainly sound like ear mites, he may need ear medication (drops or ointment) check with ur vet. Do not use OTC medications unless ok`d by the vet. as those can further his skin irritations.
Reply:That's possible. He may have an ear infection too. It could be a yeast infection in his ears. Antibiotics can cause yeast infections in animals, just like they can in humans. I know this sounds silly, but it's true. My dog has gotten a yeast infection in his ears before. You need to take him to the vet and get medication to take care of the infection.
Reply:Look up Simplicef on the web and see the side affects, if you cannot find them give your vet a call, no need to pay an office visit for a possible side effect.

Actually this is a good chance to test out your vet and find their priorities and knowledge. Look it up and with the knowledge in hand call them.

But don't stop the Rx, finish it, check it out first and only stop it on your vets order.

Personally I don't think Simpliicf has any terminal side effects

My Mother In Law's Dog constantly ITCHES!!!!?

I have a 4 month old baby that goes to her Grandmas house everyday from 8 - 5p.m. Well, she sneezes a lot over there and cries all day for her. We have tried everything from changing her formula to getting my baby on medication to keep her stomach in order because we blamed it on stomach problems. While my babies problems went away at home (my home) they continued over at grandmas house. The only thing I can link it to is their dog. It has a skin infection and it is constantly itching and his dander flys everywhere. This dog smells so bad. It all began in the summer when they were giving him flea baths because he was infected w/fleas, well, that dried out his skin and now he constantly itches. I think my baby might be allergic to this dog. Since they cannot afford to take this dog to the vet, is there a remedy out there that is natural that you can use on a dog w/itchy skin? Maybe if he stopped itching and his dander was under control, my baby might be happier.

My Mother In Law's Dog constantly ITCHES!!!!?
I'm appalled at this.

First, if you suspect that your child is allergic to the dog, have your child tested for allergies to be sure. It's ridiculous that you would keep sending her to grandmas where she is exposed to something she might be allergic to, day after day. Find out what is causing your child's reaction first.

Second, if your mother-in-law cannot afford to take this dog to the vet and he has a skin infection and is constantly itching, then either do the nice thing and take the dog to the vet for her, or help her find the dog a home where the owners can afford to care for it. This is a living being, and just because it's a dog does not mean no medical care is needed - if it's a skin infection, it needs to be treated. Period. If someone doesn't have the money to provide for an animal's basic needs, they need to do the responsible thing and find someone else to take the animal.
Reply:Another thing, I looked at your profile of other answers you gave and you are a little "know it all" aren't you? Geeeezzz. Lighten up! Report It

Reply:Switch the dog food. Make sure the dog is eating a Premuim food - no by products or Corn. Also make sure there is no Wheat in the food. Wheat is the #1 culprit for skin allergies. The food should have linoleic acid (sp). That helps with the skin. You can also purchase something called linetone. There is a dry itchy skin formula. Check petco or petsmart
Reply:yes there is this spry, shampo your mom can buy at walmat i be live it is made by hartz if you can,t find it ask some one they well tell you i use it on my dogs but i for got the name and and if your baby is allergicto dogs she don,t need to be around dogs take her the doctors tell them what she does when she is around them maybe they can help her
Reply:If the dog were eating a species appropriate diet of raw meaty bones and organs, the dog would get tremendously better. He probably does need an antibiotic to clear up any secondary infection, as well as a few days on prednasone to stop the itch quickly.

A raw diet is less expensive than kibble because between Craig's List, Freecycle, and the sales, you will spend less money. The dog will also thrive on the correct diet, so he won't have to go to the vet so often, which will make him less expensive to maintain.

If they can't afford to take the dog to the vet, then maybe you should pitch in and help out. The course of medicines plus the visit shouldn't run more than 60 bucks or so, and if your child is having health issues related to the dog's skin condition, then you need to take a proactive approach to getting it taken care of.

If you think the dog is driving you people crazy, imagine how it feels to be the dog!
Reply:No offense meant to anyone - but switching the dog food probably is NOT the best solution!! It would take months to see if this worked anyway.

A lot of dogs have skin problems, often genetic %26amp; usually not food related at all.

The dog sounds disgusting - I feel for ya!

The problem may be chronic, meaning that it would be a LOT of work for grandma to try to keep up on getting this dog healthy, maybe with no solution.

Some things she could TRY would be giving it a weekly bath. Use a mild shampoo %26amp; rinse the dog very thoroughly. If the dog is clean, it will probably help his skin a lot - and might also help with the smell.

In addition to making sure that the dog is very clean, she could also try giving him a benadryl tablet in case he is allergic to something. Of course, this is only if the dog is relatively large. If he's smaller, she could give him half a tablet to see if that helps with the itching.

They could also try vacuuming every day, cuz the dog may be allergic to the dust in the carpets.

Good luck!
Reply:Hi .. giving the dog a flea bath did not do this. he has an alergy to fleas. So he licks and scratches ok. He needs antibiotic to get rid of the skin infection he has 1st'' then he needs oatmeal baths go to a pet store %26amp; get this. If you can't afford a vet go to a spay and neutering society they may help yu. call first '' plus get flea meds from them too AND don't forget to ask them if they give you antibiotics to ''prescribe it to you so yu can buy it at (zellers or london drugs or super store pharmacy other wise it will cost way too much ok good luck and why i know this is my dog had this. he is fine now!! proper care is easy and not soo expensive..if you work at it and the benefit is a healthy dog and family is happy if we get rid of our pets we loose in the long run as they help our sanity. tyty.
Reply:never let that baby in the same house as the dog or she will die
Reply:The same thing happened to me, it was like, once the allergy occured, then it snowballed! Luckily, I found a simple solution, Walmart carries the product SULFADENE in several forms. I used the shampoo and the topical, and all was well within 2 weeks. Good luck and I hope you all get some relief!
Reply:Ok...your baby is not allergic to the dog. GI issues are not signs of allergies in a human unless it is diatery allergies which in turn might be that she is allergic to the formula you are given.

The dog: its skin infections that are most likely cause by a staph infection are NOT contagious to you or your baby unless you two are extremely immunosuppressed. Tell your mom to apply flea control (Advantage or Frontline) every 2 weeks to rule out a flea allergy. Her dog needs to be treated with an antibiotic for a minimum of 3 weeks to clear up infection. The odor is from the infection. Flea baths DO NOT WORK. The remedy for you and your mom is to get rid of the dog if you cant meet its needs. I dont have children myself, but that is why I dont. I dont like kids and I dont have the money to meet their needs. Think about this.
Reply:fleas or ticks, by the sound of it. your mother in law must get her dog seen to or she needs reporting for willful neglect. especially since your child is obviouly allergic to the poor dog's parasites. do not! allow her to see the child at all, your home or hers, til she sorts out her dogs problems. may create soe grief, but for the sake of your wee yin %26amp; the dog, be strong. you can use your own child's welfare as a weapon to force this cruel woman to see to her own dependent's welfare.

Do..............?

do short haired dogs have more skin problems than long haired dogs?

Do..............?
Skin issues are not more or less common depending upon the length of your dogs coat, it depends on the breed. Specific breeds are pre-dispositioned to have skin issues.
Reply:no they can both get the same skin problems and have an equal chance of it.
Reply:It all depend on the breed some or just more prone to skin problems than other. a more pampered pouch the ones getting gromed all the time will develop more skin problems as your taking away the natural oil build up in the dogs coat.
Reply:No. I agree with Jo.

What should I do with my dog who developed severe hives after giving him a cookie?

I gave my dog Sarge a homemade cookie (oatmeal, raisins, whole wheat flour, egg, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, almonds) and noticed after a couple of hours he had developed hives all over his body and face. The lips, eyes, around the nose started swelling really bad so I figured he had an allergic reaction to one of the ingredients in the oatmeal-raisin cookie. He just turned 1 yr old and never had problems, except skin irritations due to carpet cleaners. I gave him 50mg of Benadryll that night and it *seemed* to lessen the swelling. I gave him another dose before I left for the day. I'm hoping he gets better by the time I get back. He's breathing is fine though his face and body looked really bad that night. I shall wait but I'm in need of some info regarding the same experiences with severe allergic reactions to maybe nuts(?). Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

What should I do with my dog who developed severe hives after giving him a cookie?
TAKE HIM TO THE VETS RIGHT AWAY!!!
Reply:Take him to the vets immediately.
Reply:Take him to the vet and DON'T feed him "people food" anymore. You're libel to kill him. They make treats for dogs. Buy him some of those.
Reply:He needs to go to the Vet NOW. He is obviously in distress. It probably is an allergic reaction to something. The Vet will make sure he doesnt get any worse!!! Just to be safe. Take him NOW%26gt;

Good Luck

Sarge is a great name. (My ex and a few people still call me that)
Reply:your doing the right thing!! If you dog starts to have any other symptoms, call the vet, because just like us it can be deadly. I'll be thinking about your sitz, and good luck and it will work out. I know its hard to feel sooo helpless and feel like there got to be more you can do, but right your pet should be watch for at least checked on for 48 hours. NUT allergies can be good or bad, just keep an eye on your pet or a neighbor, somebody, you know. Hives are terrible, have you had them?
Reply:Feed him strictly dog food and cut out treats between meals or you will soon have an obese dog on your hands , you are not being kind to your pet by giving him that sort of food, and you could kill him. The next allergic reaction could be fatal.

Dog scratching question?

My dog does have allergy problems with his ears and dry skin on his back, but for the last month or so he has been how can I explain this..... it looks like he is gnawing at his crotch ALOT and the sound is so gross, it wakes me up at night, and he doesn't have fleas, and have looked at the area and I don't see anything. Any ideas?

Dog scratching question?
What type of dog food at you feeding him? You need to feed him a good quality dog food with a low grain amount such as Canidae.

The majority of allergies in dogs is caused by the grain in their dog food so you need to slowly transition him onto a new dog food- automatically changing dog food can cause vomiting and diarrhea. Start by putting 25% new food with 75% old food and over a two week time period, slowly make it more new food until he is completely on the new dog food.

It also would not hurt to take him to the vet because it sounds like his skin is irritating him a lot.

Also, go to the pet store and buy a good quality dog shampoo with oatmeal- oatmeal helps with dry skin.
Reply:take him to the vet
Reply:I suggest an oatmeal bath given by your groomer/yourself

ALLERGIES: The fastest and easiest remedy is to give your pet a cool-water soak. Bathe your pet for about 5 to 10 minutes in cool bath water, since warm water aggravates the itch. To make the soaks even more soothing, vet’s sometimes recommend adding colloidal oatmeal (such as Aveeno) to the bath water. It gives the water a smooth, silky feel that will help calm the crankiest skin. If you don’t have colloidal oatmeal or an oatmeal shampoo, you can substitute regular oatmeal from the kitchen. Take an old sock and fill it with oatmeal. Tie the sock over your bathtub spout so the water comes through the oatmeal.
Reply:take him to the vet ......
Reply:Food allergy...what do you feed him? get Premium food not grocery store food.
Reply:If he has allergies it could be that. Try bathing him with a medicated shampoo or oatmeal.

If he gets groomed he would have gotten a sanitary cut (which would include shaving around his crotch area). Sometimes the hair growing back can make them itch, I've had clients call me a couple days after a groom asking the same question.
Reply:have you tried eqyys products before? ...i had a dog with bad skin allergies and started using the shampoo and spray.. it cleared up her smell and flakiness... as for the current scratching problem, i'd take him into the vet just to be on the safe side...
Reply:you better take to the vet don't ignore it, they can stop the infection very well and let you know what is going on. as sooner is better.
Reply:my dog does the same thing,he gnaws so much his hair comes out.I took him to the vet and he said although he doesnt have fleas if he comes in contact with even one and it bit him, he;ll do that because its the bite hes allergic to.Dont let him stay outside very long and bath him with medicated shampoo.
Reply:Could be sexual activity - as with my dog
Reply:I would go to Petsmart or Petco and find a different food. Be aware of what is in the food you currently feed him and find something that doesn't have whats in his current food. My dog had allergies to her food. We were feeding her lamb and rice. We figured out she was allergic to rice and she is allergic to chicken. She now eats sweet potato and fish from Dick Van Patten's line of food from Petco. She has not had the constant itching and ear problems since we switched her.

My dog started licking her paws...now they are red and raw..?

I noticed that my dog had matted hair on her front paws, so I sat her down to brush her. Well, her paws were wet and matted because she is licking them so much! I started to brush her and then I pulled up this clump of hair and her skin was so red and raw, it must hurt her so bad. It looks like she has been licking her paws for days now. We switched her food a few weeks ago and she has been getting dandruff.(which she never had on her old food) I didn't notice any nasty critters like lice or fleas on her, but I am very worried that she might have mange and transfer it to me and my family. I am starting to get very worried that she might have some serious problem. I have never seen a dog lick itself until its skin is raw and bloody. I want her to be as safe and healthy as possible. Has anyone experienced anything like this with their animals before?

My dog started licking her paws...now they are red and raw..?
Well, I'm no expert when it comes to this stuff, but you should probably play it safe and take her to see a vet.
Reply:what food did you switch her to?

i only ask b/c i doubt its mange (but a vet visit is always best) and it sounds like allergies.
Reply:I'd take her to the vet to get allergy tested. It's common for them to lick their paws A LOT when they have allergies. She is probably allergic to something in her new food. If she did well on her old food you should probably switch her back.
Reply:Our lab is prone to allergies (bad ones) and one time she began licking her paws and they became red, raw, and even became quite swollen. She ended up on medication and I had to soak her paws in warm water mixed with betadyne (until the mixture was the color of strong tea)... after soaking twice a day, 20 minutes per foot and doing the meds for like, apx 2 weeks it cleared up.

So like others have said, definately call te vet because it could easily get pretty bad, and pretty quickly...

Also, a good, inexpensive food that I've used is avoderm lamb and rice. There are other, better brands for allergies that could help also.

Avoid foods that have corn as a main ingredient (look for foods that have real meat as the main ingredients and lamb is good... duck is another good meat)
Reply:Her paws were already injured, that's why she licked them to soothe the pain. By you being the owner not paying any attention to her til it was too late. Now her paws are infected, so she needs medical attention, because going in the grass and wet areas is not helping it outside. Vet care soon.
Reply:It sounds like she's allergic to the new food that you switched her to. There might be an ingredient that she's allergic to that the previous diet that she was on doesn't have. Dogs tend to lick themselves raw because they're very itchy. You can take her to the vet and see if it's that but in order to know that she's definitely allergic to the food is by taking a blood test for allergy testing. They might recommend a specific diet for her to calm down her itchiness. I doubt it would be mange. So bring her to the vet and see what they say.
Reply:My dog tends to do that too but not on her paws. She usually nibbles the area around her tail in the summer time because of dry skin.

I think your dog might have had an allergic reaction to the new food you've given her. For the paws, try to keep an eye on her and not let her lick it. Putting vasaline on it can help control the dryness and itching.
Reply:My dog had a similar thing. The vet indicated that it was an allergy of some kind and prescribed some ointment which has proved very effective. It relieves the itchiness and discourages the dog from licking her paws.

Any solutions for a dog with thinning belly fur?

My dog typically has thin belly fur, but recently I've noticed that it's so thin I can pretty much see his skin.

My dog is a bit lazy and loves to lie around on the carpet all day. I play with him, but he is most happy just rolling around the carpet and napping. Could laying down all day be a cause for why there is barely any fur on his belly?

The coat on the other areas of his body are fine and he doesn't seem to have any health problems.

Any solutions for a dog with thinning belly fur?
you might take the dog to the vet or at least call and see what they say. It could just be from laying in the house all day or your dog could have a thyroid problem.

These are some symptoms of hypothyroidism in dogs

Lethargic behavior such as a lack of interest in play, frequent napping, tiring out on long walks

Hair loss, especially on the trunk or tail (“rat’s tail”)

Discoloration or thickening of the skin where hair loss has occurred

So you might check with your vet just to be safe

Reply:Alot of dogs have little fur on their bellies, if some at all. It's completely normal, and just how they are made. Even dogs with a ton of fur, such as my Yorkshire Terrier and Papillon, don't have much belly fur. When my papillon was younger, she had more fur on her belly than she does now.

Honestly, I wouldn't worry about it too much, but checking it out with a vet is the best thing. If fur anywhere else (legs, random spots on her body, around her eyes and face) starts to thin or fall out, then it's really time to get it checked out.

Shitzu dog, allergies....?

I have a shitzu dog who is going on five. She has had terrible problems with her skin her whole life. She itches untill she is raw sometimes. The vet said i could give her a small dose of benadryll and she gets steroid shots every 30 days. Despite the shot and benadryll, she is still itching and it is making her very grouchy. Does anyone have this problem with their shitzus? I think it is fairly common in them. Also, does anyone know of any reactions to the steroid shots? What can i do to help her further?? Thanks!!!

Shitzu dog, allergies....?
Hi, the dog food is a good probability. I switched my itchy female to Natural Balance duck %26amp; potato which is Hypoallergenic and very pricey but it really made a difference in her skin. I also starting giving her a multi-vitamin and began adding fish oil to her food as well. I COMPLETELY stopped giving her those garbage filled treats too !! I now give her a baby carrot, a cheese cube, and treats that I have made myself with only natural ingredients with NO-SUGAR. I use honey to lightly sweeten the treats. She also gets egg, plain yogurt, rice, no-sugar applesauce-[her fav], shredded carrots, no-sugar peanut butter on rotation in her kibble. She looks beautiful now and only itches like a normal dog, not constantly or until she bleeds and her fur falls out!! Good Luck!!

and p.s the venison Natural Balance was on the the re-call list NOT duck %26amp; potato, thank goodness.
Reply:I'm so sorry about your Shih Tzu's allergies...

I've found many times the cause of allergies is the dogs' food.

Take her off her current food and put her on a premium dog food that is made with Lamb and Rice. (You won't find that in a grocery store - go to PetsMart or another pet store).

If she is on Lamb and Rice now and itching, try Duck and Potato, or Turkey or Salmon.

Several of my dogs have had miraculous results - just by changing foods!

Good luck to you!!!
Reply:Don,t bathe her every day, just if she needs it.Make sure the shampoo you are using for her is gentle and watered down.Even baby shampoo if used should be watered down as it drys out the dogs skin.
Reply:The previous poster is correct, the problem is more likely food than anything. I would ask your vet to perform allergy testing to determine exactly what your dog is allergic to. Many times, the offending allergen is common in most dog foods (it could be chicken, wheat, corn...anything). After you determine what the allergen is, contact a holistic vet (if you don't have one nearby, ask your vet for a referral and use phone consultations) and talk to them about how to use a homemade diet tailored for your dog and her allergies, as well as supplements you might need for a homemade diet. Allergies are common in dogs, and many vets only prescribe things to treat the symptoms instead of the cause. Good Luck to you.
Reply:I have two dogs who both have skin allergies. One of them has the allergies so bad that he is on a pill called Hydroxizine every day. If I take him off of it he gets itchy just like your dog. He scratched so bad that he had hair falling out. The medication is wonderful and has no side effects for him. Occasionally I need to use Benedryl because he gets ear infections alot too and that helps with the itchiness in his ears too. Another thing that I swear by is oatmeal shampoo. I spent tons of money on special shampoo that is supposed to be good for allergies and none of them worked, they actually made him itchier, if that was possible (this was before I put him on the medicine). After using all the "fancy" brands, I found that the Walmart brand of oatmeal shampoo actually calmed down his skin. It is thick and soothes the skin. But be sure to not bathe her more than once a month, and only do it then if she absolutely needs it. Bathing can take away natural oils and contribute to the problem. But when you do bathe her, use oatmeal shampoo.

Anyway, ask your vet about Hydroxizene. I don't have the bottle in front of me, but he will know what you're talking about. I hope this helps. I know she must be miserable.

My beagle mix seems to have itchy dry skin... Advice?

I have a beagle mix I believe the other half is collie, based on his coat, neck and facial structure.

He has always been very itchy. We had to get him a hydrocortosone shot in january when he was chewing the skin off his back legs. I got hydrocortoson spray, but he hates for me to spray it on him and it doesn't last long. I'm not sure if it is his skin or an allergy. I dont believe it is fleas, because i never see fleas on him or in the bathtub when I give him baths.

He seems to extra itchy after a bath which makes me believe it is dry skin. I am using an oatmeal shampoo that doesnt seem to work. He itches all day. He makes his skin red with all the scratching. Anyone have any advice that has been thru this? I have never had a dog with a problem like this.

I was told to give him benadryl to see if it is an allergy, but i would have no idea how much to give him!

My beagle mix seems to have itchy dry skin... Advice?
Please call your vet in regards to how much benadryl you can give your dog. Every dog varies in how much they can tolerate and there are only certain types of benadryl that can be safely used in dogs.

As for the itchy skin I would make another appointment with your vet. It sounds like, to me, that he needs another cortisone treatment and it might help him to go on an allergy food like Eukanuba Response FP or Hills z/d.

Also make sure that your dog is on a good quality flea treatment as even one flea bite can cause a massive itchy response in dogs with flea allergy dermatitis.
Reply:I have a beagle and he had horrible dandruff. We finally took him to the vet and discovered that he had a skin infection. We were very surprised because we also thought it was in allergic reaction to something. Our vet prescribed an antibiotic that cleared his infection. Now, he is dandruff free and has been for the last year!
Reply:Dogs can take up to 6 benedryl.

It could be about anything.

Try mixing up a raw egg in his regular food and feed it to him daily. This helps create healthy skin cells and will give him a shiny coat.

Give him a bath in head n shoulders. It sounds weird but I bathe my German Shepard in it and he is no longer itchy. He has psoriasis.
Reply:Your first step should be a consultation with your veterinarian, as should be the case with ANY medical problems with ANY animal. These are the people who go through years of schooling to be able to answer such questions.

You should also take a close look at the dog's food. Are you feeding a premium brand of food, one that has meat as the first ingredients listed on the contents? Or are you feeding a supermarket brand, with corn, wheat, etc., as the first several ingredients? Often, the supermarket brands can cause problems in dogs.

Finally, too many baths can be a problem in many dogs. Dogs who don't shed their coat, like Poodles, DO need regular bathing. Dogs who shed their hair on a routine basis (like Beagles) only need a couple of baths a year, if that.

Don't give medications to your dog unless or until you know the real reason for the problem. You might only be adding to the itching. Talk with your vet.
Reply:Then he has got an allergy. It may be to his food and it may be to some cleaning product or other substance that you have in your house. If you Google "benadryl dog allergy" you should get a dosage back, but try to think about solving the problem rather than masking the symptoms.

Dr. Pitcairn's book

covers allergies and suggests recipes that will help you to isolate what it is that's upsetting your dog.
Reply:Well, I have no advice 4 you....But atleast I can tell you that u r not alone! My dog has the same thing, i can stand to see my baby suffering :{ all that oatmeal stuff i bought does nothin' but clean ot my wallet + credit card! LOL:]
Reply:you should have your vet do a allergy test on your dog. it takes a little bit of blood but its the best way to find out whats bugging him. try cooking for him. look for dog food recipes on line. stick with chicken or fish beef can cause reaction in some dogs mine is one of them. also stay away from corn. try chicken and potatoes.
Reply:We have a 2 year old Blue Heeler and she has had the same problem. We started to give her a little bit of olive oil in her bowl with every meal. To our surprise, her dandruff stopped and she doesn't scratch nearly as much!!!

I am trying to get info on pit bulls?

I have a 2 year old male Red nose Pit and I am trying to find out if they are prone to kidney problems.

My Dog is having coat problems skin problems and is peeing and pooping some blood.

I can not get him to the vet until Monday and am just trying to find some info online for now.

Thank you.

I am trying to get info on pit bulls?
There's several things that could cause blood coming from both places...but not usually at the same time. A urinary tract infection (UTI) is common, quite painful...and easily treatable. The blood in the poop could be hookworm which attaches to the intestines and causes sores which seep. These can both be serious if not treated, but she should be fine until Monday. These symptoms could be something else entirely, but both of the descriptions are common problems in dogs.

Coat problems can be caused by the two illnesses...especially worms. They suck nutrients from the dog. Feeding a high quality food that have the Omega fatty acids included will help get her healthy and bring her coat back to it's original shine.

You might not find what you're looking for in the below links as far as kidney disease answers go...your vet can do that, but there is excellent information on the breed.

If not I find an emergency vet!
Reply:Here's some great information on pitbulls in general:

A generally healthy breed, although some are prone to hip dysplasia, hereditary cataracts, allergies to grass and congenital heart disease.
Reply:My Pit has skin problems, as far as the problem your's is having I'm not sure. I hope it isn't serious. Good luck..
Reply:Skin problems for pit bulls are comman. I live in a desert and my dog as great skin and coat. 2 or three time a week I mix 2-3raw eggs in 1/2 cup of olive oil and give it to him, he likes it plain but you may have to mix it with food. Blood in the poop may be worms of some kind.

What is the 1 thing you should look out for when buying a toy dog?

ok. . . .. I LOVE POMERANIANS!! They are sooo adorable and cute. But i would like to know what are the negative things about them. Like do they get skin problems, bad allergies? Stuff like that. THANX-A-BUNCH!! =D

What is the 1 thing you should look out for when buying a toy dog?
Just be certain to meet the parents..then, if they are just as the dog you want your puppy to grow to be, then you have a good chance of choosing just the right dog..

Pomeranians do not have terribly many problems. They can have Collapsing Tracheas, slipping knee caps (luxating patellas) , and skin/food allergies (they don't tolerate corn well) and cataracts..But, mostly they are one of the healthiest of the toy breeds..

Here is a good list of health problems you may encounter with Poms..Be sure to ask the breeder about them..%26gt; http://www.mbfonline.com/pomhealth/

P.S. they are not heavy shedders, unless they are not fed a premium kibble..and ALL dogs deserve to have a quality diet provided for them.

They are not yappers, unless you allow them to be.. Ours did not yap.
Reply:lots of hair...they shed a lot, very friendly with familys and kids, and just a wonderful pet....good luck
Reply:Google is a good source to find all of that infomation.
Reply:The number one thing is people often do not train/socialize them properly because they are so small, and think it really is not doing much harm, but then when they are let outside the house they bark and snap at everything in sight.
Reply:Toy dogs of all types tend to be very hyper and active. They bark alot and jump alot.

Locate a copy of "Pomeranians for dummies" - the series is great and gives you all the info you need to decide if that's the right dog for you.
Reply:Toy dogs are very cute, but they have their down sides. The problem is, they are so small, that they aren't really all that bright. I know a guy who has pomeranians and has had (many of) them for over 25 years, and he always claims that they are almost impossible to house break, you can train them, but they will have A LOT of accidents. I don't know first hand, but that is what he told me.
Reply:when i was growing up my family raised poms and they are good smart dogs but they do have some down falls. they are heavy barkers constantly.they tend to die of heart failure and or stomach problems. they do need to be constantly remind of what the rules are! they have a tendency that if the boss is not paying them attention or don't care about what they do then they can be very mischievous!
Reply:If you want to do some research by yourself, I'd try wikipedia or google or yahoo! Either of the one.

Small dogs are yapppppers! Poms are humongus yappers. I have two pugs, and I love them. Small dogs aren't really a hassle, but some things that I have run into are these:

Small dogs don't have a really strong digestive tract, as I've found. I feed them at about 6 in the morning, and put them in the basement. My dad feeds them at about, 6ish, and they go to the bathroom. We have to put out 'wee-wee' pads for them, because they can't hold it all, all day.

Depending on your age, like, if you're young, like me, and going to college soon, you probably wouldn't want to get a Pom. Small dogs live a long time, so they'll be around for a while.

I believe that Poms have larger corneas than other dogs, meaning that they can get scratched easily, and sometimes they 'goop' more than others. You should keep them clean, it's not something big but it's just there for you to know.

Also, Pom's have longer hair I believe. So you would probably want to get them groomed once in a while, especially since they shed. And, depending on where you live, it could get hot, and be uncomfortable for the dog in the summer.

I copied and pasted this from- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pomeranian_...

The most common problem in Pomeranians is luxating patella. Also Legg-Calvé-Perthes syndrome and hip dysplasia can occur, but are rare in this small breed. Patent ductus arteriosus (a congenital heart defect) and collapsing trachea have become serious problems in Poms. Dry eye, tear duct disorders and cataracts that can appear in young adulthood and often lead to blindness are also common. Skin diseases are quite common, especially allergies (that often leads to acute moist dermatitis or "hot spots") and follicular dysplasia (also known as alopecia X). Other problems that occur regularly include hypothyroidism, epilepsy, and hypoglycemia. Occasionally, hydrocephalus can occur in Pom puppies. Poms, like many Toy breeds, are prone to bad teeth and harmless episodes of reverse sneezing.

One of my pugs gets reverse sneezing, it's nothing to worry about, and it doesn't hurt him.

Hope I helped!
Reply:what out look out for is the breeder

if you do not want to be sealing with the chances of slipping patellas, collapse tracheas, temperment problems find a show breeder who has them titled and health screens and has OFA and CERF clearance on the parents before breeding them

Then you will be getting a well bred puppy who should have very little health problems and to ensure they stay that way make sure to feed them a good quality food to prevent immune system problems so they won't be developing allergies

How do i put weight on my dog with severe food allergies?

I have a 4 yr old mastiff mix that is alergic to EVERYTHING! I have found Wellness kibble and that helps but he is very, very skinny. He weighs about 75lbs and should weigh about 90-100 lbs. I have tried increasing his meal amount and frequency and adding cooked rice to his diet, but this tends to lead to stomach upset and then he wants to eat grass, which he is allgergic to. He also takes Benedryl and Prednizone for the more severe itching and skin problems associated with the itching. HELP!!!! Have gone to the vet and has had allergy testing done. The only grain he's not allergic to is rice and fish is the only protein he is allergic to. Is there a hypo-allergenic weight gain product out there or a homemade high calorie something i can feed him? Everything i have found has corn or soy or wheat that he can't eat.

How do i put weight on my dog with severe food allergies?
Maybe this food http://www.naturapet.com/brands/californ...

PLEASE be warned about the benedryl and prednizone use..these medications used regularly over time can have serious consequences on the immune system and liver. Could medicated baths help?
Reply:ask your vet, there are rx diets, that can be high in fats and good for putting on weight. The clinic I work at carries Royal Canin like potato and venison, potato and rabbit, potato and whitefish, duck and green pea. Foods that dogs have never had before that way they generally don't react to them...but yet it helps with weight.
Reply:try givving him puppy food. It's not the healthiest thing for an adult dog, but it will make him gain weight for puppies need more fat and protien than an adult dog. Also if that doesn't work, mix some soft food into the hard food.

Some other non-grain dog foods are: Solid Gold, Nature's Variety, and Call of the Wild (a really good food). You can try those also.

If that doesn't work, try to find a food with LOTS of fat it...the more fat the more pounds your dog *should* gain

Also, the person above recommended Royal Canin. I wouldn't reccomend that, only because it's not too health for the dogs.
Reply:I don't know what the ingredients are, but Sciene Diet makes lots of different formulas of food, like for dogs with sensitive skin, or delicate stomachs, etc. If you can't find a store-bought food, ask your vet what people food you can give to replace it. My friend's mother cooks for her three dogs twice a day, she says there's nothing to it if you know what you're doing.
Reply:Did you mean fish is the only protein he's NOT allergic to? If he's not allergic to any other proteins, there are specialty dogfoods out there that don't contain any sort of grain fillers.

My dog is currently on Natural Balance Potato %26amp; Duck formula. It has no grains whatsoever, and she's doing fantastic on it. These are the ingredients:

Potatoes, Duck Meal, Duck, Canola Oil, Potato Fiber, Natural Flavor, Flaxseed

If he's NOT allergic to fish, Natural Balance has a Sweet Potato and Fish dogfood that has no grains. These are the ingredients:

Sweet Potatoes, Potatoes, Salmon, Salmon Meal, Canola Oil, Potato Fiber, Salmon Oil, Flaxseed

The rest of the ingredients are just vitamins. You can find this dry dog food at specialty pet food stores. It's a little more expensive, but as the owner of a dog with allergies to many grains, I can assure you, it's worth it!

Is the dog allergic to eggs? When I brought home an emaciated dog from the shelter where I volunteer, I started giving her a poached egg each night before bed, and I fed her puppy food. She gained 20lbs in 3 weeks!

Good luck!
Reply:Same issue with my girl. She is on home made BARF which had resolved her problem completely.

Best of luck!!!
Reply:Is he fixed? That can help put on weight.

So he can eat rice plus any chicken, beef, etc. except fish and he can eat vegetables? Why does he throw up the rice?

With a large, skinny dog experiencing digestive problems, I would be concerned about bloat. I wouldn't feed him overly large meals but distribute them throughout the day.

The easiest way to put on weight (for humans and dogs) is to pair simple carbohydrates (sugars) with excess calories. Fat is the most calorie-dense food.

You can pair white rice with beef or chicken and some vegetables (steamed broccoli, beans, peas, etc.) and cook it together with either vegetable oil or butter. You might try potatoes including sweet potatoes if he isn't allergic to those. I would add a doggy vitamin just to be on the safe side.

That gives you protein, fat and carbohydrates and you don't have to worry about his being allergic to anything (including preservatives) since you know exactly what you have put in there. Also, for allergies, I would get stainless steel bowls as some dogs are allergic to plastics.
Reply:If you're willing to go homemade you might consider a raw diet (BARF). Are you saying fish is the only protein he is allergic to or is that a typo? If it isn't there's a lot of possibilities for protein other than chicken, beef, lamb: turkey, rabbit, ostrich, quail, game hen see www.omaspride.com. Other companies do exotics like Hare Today of goat, bison. I sympathize with you, it's hard to have this going on, one of my dogs has airborne allergies. Good luck.

Is it normal for a maltese dog to constantly lick and bite at his paws?

he is one year old, and has no apparent skin problems, but chews and licks his paws (all four) sporadically throughout the day. i don't know if this is a weird habit or how to break it? he's been seen by a vet recently and has no health issues.

Is it normal for a maltese dog to constantly lick and bite at his paws?
Could be an allergy.

Could be anxiety.

Could be just a bad habit.

Could be boredom.

Could be that he needs more exercise!

Could be sensitive to something in his food.

Hmmmm.

If you can easily distract him from chewing (for example, with a treat), it's probably just a habit or behavior he's developed. If not, he's most likely either anxious about or allergic to something. Try watching him, to see when he tends to chew his paws ... or, maybe, what is causing it.

If you can't figure it out, please talk to your vet. Dogs can develop very painful and hard-to-heal spots on their paws if they are allowed to chew them. Since your dog is biting at all 4 paws, I would suspect that it is a systemic problem, or something related to boredom or anxiety. Good Luck.
Reply:awwn there so cute how much was he
Reply:yes bc my grandma has the same dog and she does tht all the time

i dont think it is anything 2 worry about
Reply:It can be a sign of allergies, especially if the paws are being stained brown. If the fur is staining, he's doing it a lot. Rubbing his face on things and shaking his head/pawing at ears are signs of allergy too. Dogs are commonly allergic to fleas, pollen or food. Beef, chicken, and corn are the most common food allergies. Like humans, dogs with allergies usually are allergic to multiple things. They can take Benadryl, I'd ask your vet about allergies next time you visit.
Reply:Well it depends how much he does it.

Our dog used to really lick and chew at her front paws and it turned out she had a mild rash.

You may want to check if this is the case with your dog.
Reply:Could be allergies. Our Chow does this constantly. Vet prescribed Prednisone, which has helped.
Reply:If he has no apparent skin problems, it could be an anxiety issue. Doe he do it when he is left alone or is it an "anytime" thing? Perhaps you could get him a crate (if he doesn't already have one) so that he has a little "nest" or "den" of his own to call home. I wish I could help you more but you are skimpy on the details...Sorry.

Good luck

PS - Even though skin issues are not apparent, allergies can cause a dog to do this so pay close heed to the food (make sure it is high quality with no preservtives...)
Reply:Usually when dogs chew their feet is a sign of a food allergy. I would switch to Wellness Fish %26amp; Sweet Potato formula.
Reply:my dog also does that, but not 24/7. If your hand was reeeally itchy, i dunno about you, but id do everything in my power to itch it.,, don't let your dog do it too much though. Once i didnt see my dog doing it, and he bit off a piece of their black circle paw thing... not gooood. call their name and act like your angry, if she/he continues to do it, slap her/him.. not really hard, just hard enough to get their attention. its also fun to give your dog a huuuge loong glare. xD not needed tho. if she/he tries to bite you after, distract them by putting their food dish next to em or get a ball; something to stop em. Its not good for people to bite their nails, n its not good for dogs to bite their paws.

Reply:If the vet says hes ok, your dogs ok. unless you see a serious problem. Your doggy's normal trust me.:)
Reply:It could be an allergy to food, or even grass.

Sometimes dogs will have an allergic reaction to something and chew and lick their paws for relief, and after a while it just becomes a habit, which can be an anxiety problem. I know Dobermans are really bad about this. They will actually lick their tops of their paws until they develope a raised hard area on the paw.

I would take him to the vet and have him checked out. Has he been obedience trained? It can even be a problem of insecurity. That does not mean it is your fault, some dogs just need some help with this.
Reply:Check the hair between his pads...if it is too long it could be irritating him.
Reply:It's normal.

I have a really itchy dog. What are some home solutions? Can I feed her cod liver oil?

*Many *years ago I had a bulldog with unbelievable skin problems. I know that there was something easy I used to do, but I can't remember what. I *think* I used to feed her a spoonful of cod liver oil. but I can't remember, I might be imagining that. Does anyone know? Now I have a chow chow.

I have a really itchy dog. What are some home solutions? Can I feed her cod liver oil?
I think that daily cod liver oil would be too much, in fact, it's my understanding that you should not give fish liver oil, but whole body fish oils. You should also give them vitamin E with any fish oils you give as they can't put it to good use without the Vitamin E. I give my dogs each a 1200 mg capsule of super omega oil and a 400 i.u. capsule of vitamin E every other day. You do not want to give too many fat soluble supplements as they can build up and become toxic.

My most recent adoption had incredibly itchy skin and a good diet of high quality kibble, the vitamin supplements, and raw eggs a couple times a week has done wonders for her in a very short time.

You do first have to rule out fleas. Then I would look at what food you are feeding and see if it contains wheat or corn. Wheat especially is a very common allergen for dogs and could cause your dog to have itchy skin among other issues.

My opinion on wheat and corn in dog food is that #1, they just aren't a natural part of a dog's diet and #2, of the two major recalls I know of in the past couple of years (Menu Foods and Diamond) both have been attributed to contaminated wheat and/or corn products.
Reply:I don't no what it was that you had. But fleas and ticks could be the problem.

And it won't hert to try to buy some flea formula for your dog.

Also, try to bath your dog in veggi oil. That helps.
Reply:I'm not sure about cod liver oil, but I give my itchy dog omega-3 fatty acid supplements. It seems to help quite a bit. I also give her a couple of generic benedryl pills when she really can't stop itching.

I also spray a mixture of listerine mouth wash (the plain, original kind, not the mint or any other flavor) and baby oil on the spots where she itches the most. The listerine disinfects the spots where she's scratching raw, and also discourages her from licking so much because it tastes bad. The baby oil helps soothe the skin.
Reply:You need to find out what is causing the itching first. If it's an allergy or yeast, oil wont do a thing.
Reply:Is it dry skin or fleas? If it's not fleas, the try putting a small amount of hand lotion on the areas that are dry. It seems to be working find on my dog since that is what my mom does when my dog gets dry skin.
Reply:no you are not loosing it, a spoon full of cod liver oil in there food a day helps their skin and coat, that will work fine.
Reply:You need to find the reason for the itching to solve the problem. It could be an allergy to the food that you are feeding or an allergy to grass or some of the bedding that you use. There are so many different reasons, even bathing too often can cause irritated skin. If you find the source of the irritation you will better know how to treat it.
Reply:Yes, cod liver oil might help, but there are a lot of commercial preparations that are specifically for dry and/or itchy skin and don't have the "side effects" of cod liver oil (possible diarrhea). There are a few web sites such as valleyvet.com or vetline.com that might be able to help you out.
Reply:Skin irritations with pets are *almost* always due to food allergies. Try changing the food to a higher end brand. I am getting ready to switch my do to Nature's Variety, there are other good brands that don't cost as much though. But nothing that you will find at your local Wal-Mart or grocery store. ANY brand you will find there will be stuffed with fillers and animal by-products. I don't recommend feeding your pet food like that.

Also I have been bathing my dog once a week with a pet shampoo called Allergroom. I believe you can find it on the internet for pretty cheap. Someone gave me a few bottles of it so I haven't had to purchase it yet but it seemed to help with my dogs shedding in conjunction with her altered diet.
Reply:Dogs often have "allergy" symptoms, including itching, chewing and licking, from a suppressed immune system. Many of our rescue dogs have come to us literally hairless on the back part of their bodies because of allergies. Here is one example: www.lonestarshihtzurescue.com/SeanConner...

We use two supplements to boost their immune system, Ester C and Omega 3.

The best ester C for dogs is Mega C plus at www.belfield.com. For Omega 3, we use the Missing Link or sometimes just plain fish oil capsules from the drug store.

I need advice.....my dog hurts himself?

I have a male 2 1/2 year old Golden Retriever and he has had a skin problems, but he keeps biting his paw as well as licking it constantly, he has made a circle of injury, he bleeds a little when he attacks it and cries. He's done it before but it has healed. Ive tried to spray with this one product i bought but it stings him and licks it off. I also dont know why he does this. I know it hurts at times, but thats cause he himself is going at it. I dont know its weird. If you know what im talking about, please help.

I need advice.....my dog hurts himself?
Take him to your vet. There are many possible causes for his skin problems, including fungus, allergies or bacterial infection.

After your vet has determined the cause and prescribed treatment, an Elizabethan collar may also be recommended. It looks funny, but it will keep your dog from licking or biting himself while the skin heals.
Reply:maybe he has athletes foot..take him to the vet!
Reply:The good idea would be to TAKE HIM TO THE VET!!!!
Reply:take him to the vet!!
Reply:hmmm... maybe u should take him to the vet n put him to sleep... hehehe... no la... maybe u should maybe try bathing him... must have loads of fleas...
Reply:it is just like telling a little kid not to scratch an itch..

pointless,

go to the petstore or vet and buy a cone for your dogs head it'll stop the dog from getting to the wound and then the wound can heal..

that is why they sell cones at the petstore..

they're about 15.00 good luck
Reply:chances are he has developed a "hot spot" or 'moist miliary dermatitis". no one knows what causes it, maybe a flea bite, or boredom-but it does need to be seen by a vet and attended to. he'll probably get shaved in the area of disturbance and go on oral %26amp; topical meds. good luck.
Reply:My Lab takes pills every other day for itching because she has allergies. They cost $18 every 2 months.

My friend has a dog who has to wear a large round head gear made from the same material as a milk carton - plastic. It costs about $20 and enables the affected area to heal because she can't reach it with this on her head.
Reply:The vet would probably put a cone around his neck so he would stop biting himself. He also could be allergic to something like fleas, shampoo, or something else. You can check out books or videos at a library. I sympathize! Good-luck!
Reply:I'm very sure the vet knows the answer.
Reply:You need to go to the vet. That over the counter stuff is crap. Very likely your dog has an allergy of some sort. Yes..possibly even a flea allergy. You won't see a flea, but just one bite can cause an allergic reaction. He's obviously uncomfortable with the itching and is relying on you for some medical relief.

More than likely, the vet will give him a shot of steroid to relieve the itching as well as antibiotics to treat any infection from open lesions. You'll need an Elizabeth(cone) collar to keep him from accessing the open wound until it heals. And they might give you a spray to spray a couple times a day on open lesions to relieve itching.

Its probably going to run you at least $100-$150, but he'll be much better quickly. You don't want that lesion to get terribly infected and become life or limb threatening which it can do if left untreated.
Reply:If the vet has cleared him the best bet is the Elizabethan coller. It works very well as soon as they get used to it. It can be difficult on both of you but it may have to stay on for an extended period of time so he forgets about what he used to do.
Reply:sometimes when dogs lick their paws excessively it's a sign that it may have an allergy. Since it doesn't have fleas, it could be a food allergy, dust allergy or something outdoors could be causing it. Dogs get allergies just the same as people do. Your vet can run tests to find out what he is allergic to %26amp; how to treat it. My vet once suggested Benadryl, but it will make him sleepy. Be sure of the dose you are giving him too!!!!!!

Whats the best dog food?

I have an 8yr old goldenretrivermix and a 3yrold pit they both have skin problems

Whats the best dog food?
They are mmost likely allergic to something in the food you are using. Try brands like Natura, Merrick, Natural Balance, Canidae, Solid Gold, or Eagle. Look for these brands at the smaller locally owned pet food stores(sometimes called boutiques) They will help you decide what food to try. (most of the time they will even send you home with samples for the dogs to try) Big name foods like purina brands are full of corn and wheat which most dogs develop allergies to. Quality foods will have complex protiens like meat or fish as the very first ingredient. Don't be fooled because it's a big name. Better foods are a little more expensive, but your dog will eat less because the food is more balanced.
Reply:pedigree it has vitamins
Reply:don't get canned dag food because the hard stuff is good for their teeth.
Reply:prescription canine u/d
Reply:PURINA THROUGH YAHOO PETS

I'VE ALLWAYS BEEN WITH PURINA WITH ALL LIVESTOCK AND DOG CHOW EVEN THE CAT IS ON FRISKIES

CHECK IN TO PURINA AND SEE WHY THEY HAVE BEEN IN BUISNESS SO LONG
Reply:pedigree b/c it has vitamans
Reply:Purina
Reply:Iams
Reply:it depends on the dog
Reply:Purina or Pedigree
Reply:Have you tried IAMS? ONE is also good.
Reply:Pedigree,Iams,Kibbles and Bits,Purina,
Reply:Iams all the way. Top of the line stuff. Purina and the rest are good but not top grade.
Reply:I breed Shar Pei's and they are susceptible to skin disease. I have used Iams eukanuba for the last 15 years and found it to be the best for my dogs. Do try it.
Reply:Anything that is natural. Don't feed your pets commercial food, it will give them terrible health problems when they start getting older.
Reply:well, most foods mentioned here will probably make things worse. IMO, no dog should be fed anything you can buy at a grocery store.

One person recommended things like merrick, etc. My boy has skin, food, and airborne allergies. He is fed the highest quality food possible. But it can also break my budget.

So, try something like Natural balance, chicken soup for the pet lover's soul, cannidae, or nutro.

These range in prices, but most arent too expensive. Also, try a supplement. NuPro is a GREAT one. we have all 4 of our dogs on it, and they do great. I think you can buy this online, or at a lot of pet food stores. It will most likely help with the skin issues.

Also, try herbal shampoos, or oatmeal ones targeted for skin allergies, sensitive skin, or dry skin.

also, 2 of our dogs are pits, and one is a boxer. they are on nutro, as feeding FOUR dogs the highest quality kibble can really leave you broke. But, once they were put on that they did really well. They also did well on Evolve and the Canidae I mentioned trying too.

Good luck!
Reply:For skin problems: Eukanuba

I don't remember the name of it,

but it has omega fatty acids and fish oils to enhance skin and coat. It's supposed to be one of the best on the market

and you will not have to give any other OTC or prescribed meds...unless it's a medical condition causing skin problems
Reply:Stay away from any food they sell at Wal-Mart or the grocery store.Contrary to popular belief Purina,Alpo,Iams etc,are not the best food for your dog. They are simply the companies that sink millions and millions into advertising to make you think they are.All those foods use either animal byproducts, corn, soy,or other useless fillers. They use them because they are cheap to buy,and make your dog feel full.

Those ingredients are approved for use in dog food, but that don't mean they are the best ingredients to use.Try to find a premium food like Innova or Canidae, both are excellent foods, with no cheap to buy, useless fillers. If you can not find one of those foods, read the labels, find a food with the least amount of corn,byproducts,chemicals,etc.... sure the main source(first ingredient)of protein is ether Chicken,or chicken meal, never chicken byproducts.Other meats are also fine as long as it's the meat or meal, and not a byproduct. The better the ingredients the better the health of your dog will be.Premium foods also help do away with dry skin, excess shedding and dull looking fur.

A premium food will cost more per bag,but in the long run is about the same as cheaper brands.A premium food does not require as much be fed, because more of it is digested as nutrients, and not expelled as waste.

Innova and Canidae are two of the best foods available.

Innova

Turkey,Chicken,Chicken Meal,Ground Barley,Ground Brown Rice,Potatoes,Natural Flavors,Chicken Fat,Herring,Apples,Carrots,Cot... Cheese.

Canidae

Chicken Meal, Turkey Meal, Brown Rice, White Rice, Lamb Meal, Chicken Fat (preserved with Mixed Tocopherols), Herring Meal, Flax Seed, Sun Cured Alfalfa Meal, Sunflower Oil, Chicken.

The main thing to remember since your dogs have skin problems is to avoid any food that contains byproducts, corn, soy, and wheat, they are the most likely reason for food related problems.Iams,Eukanuba,Purina, they all use some,or all of those things.

Can a dog be allergic to the vet's meds?

My Boston Terrier is suffering from allergies, and it think the vet's meds (antibiotics and anti-inflamatory) may be making it worse, causing him to itch and scratch even more. Is that possible, or would vet meds only help his skin problems?

Can a dog be allergic to the vet's meds?
Yes it's possible. If you are pretty sure that it's the medication that cause the allergies, stop the treatment until you meet the vet. If you're not sure about your vet, go get a second opinion from another vet.
Reply:Generally, they'd help, but a dog can be allergic to anything- just like a human!
Reply:Just as some people are allergic to certain anitbiotics and haveadvers reactions to other meds; dogs can experience the same.
Reply:yes

I have dogs die from getting their shots from an alergic reaction
Reply:Yes they can. Consult your vet right away about your concerns. Especially since you don't feel the treatment is working.
Reply:Yes pets can be allergic to medication just as humans can. Call and let your vet know. My vet told us to just use benedryal for my dogs allergies.
Reply:yes take him back to the vet and tell them
Reply:Yes they can be allergic, but are you sure its not an upset stomach from the antibiotic. Make sure he has something in his belly when he takes them.

Are you giving him benedryl? This will help with an allergic reaction to the meds too.
Reply:Any dog can be allergic or have side effects to anything. Either call the vet and ask or search the net for side effects on the drugs that he is having.
Reply:change a vet!!

Please help me help my little dog.......?

I have a 3 1/2 yr old Toy Rat Terrier....he's always had skin problems but now it's getting really bad..... I do believe it's due to fleas but I have already treated him with the drops and even a flea dip....now I think it has dried his skin out sooo bad that he's going nuts! He's now got bloody soars on his back end and nothing I can do....I want to cry as I watch the poor little guy whining and trying to dig at himself more..... I was just wondering if any one had any ideas for something immediate to help "smother" the fleas or to sooth the itching. I have been treating him with Sulfodene (per vet) due to the hot spots, but maybe that making it worse too? Please help me help my little boy.......

Please help me help my little dog.......?
He needs to go back to the vet and you need to ask the vet to put him on Frontline or Advantage. Both are products sold by the veterinarian to kill fleas and both products are very safe. Also, your dog may need a fatty acid supplement to help put oils back into his skin. Your vet should sell DermCaps or a like product to aid in this. He may also need to be put on a dog food for dogs with sensitive skin. But definately, time for a trip back to the vet!

J. Smith, Animal Control Officer
Reply:Make an appointment with the vet you most likely need something prescription for the sores and fleas
Reply:flea dips are never a good idea. try giving her brewers yeast to help with the fleas. or flea tablets instead of the liquid you put on his back. you can buy dog cortizone also to help with itching. you need to get a high quailty sensitive skin shampoo for him also. maybe by Rx. give him a bath (if its been more than a day after putting the flea stuff on him) and use a flea comb while hes wet.
Reply:It sounds like a flea allergy...

To battle the fleas, the only thing that really helps is to call in an exterminator - The DIY bombs don't work well at all. They'll do 3 treatments 14 days apart, then depending on what they use, come back quarterly or bi-annually to spray again.

As far as the hot-spots go, try Bag Balm. It's a medicated salve you can get at the pet store.
Reply:you might want to find a different vet if the one you have isn't helping your boy any.
Reply:Bathe him with an aveeno oatmeal bath soap and then apply hydrocortisone cream 2 to 3 times a day to the affected area. This may be an allergic reaction so you may want to give him a teaspoon of children's benadryl once a day. The vet approves this for dogs.
Reply:Try adding a little garlic to his food. It's a natural wormer and in some dogs helps keep them clear of fleas.

If he is suffering from dry skin a little olive oil in food his might help too.
Reply:calm down sweetie the same thing happned to me this will work i saw it on regis and kelly so i had to try it! been going strong for almost 1year now!!!! your baby will love it
Reply:i have a 1 1/2 year old toy rat terrier myself.

i used frontline on him, which is expensive but well worth it. ive seen maybe 4 fleas on him since ive bought him

what im conserned about is being the breed he is, you are keeping him as an inside dog right? toy rat terriers are inside dogs. i know the only time i take mine out is to use the bathroom and to play and stuff but NEVER leave him out all night.

i dont know about yours but mine is about 5 pounds

if you are keeping him outside, which hopefully you arent, you could try spraying your yard down completely, you can buy that spray at walmart.

I hope you can help your little pup, theyre a great species of dogs!
Reply:I have a lab that did that and since I switched him to Nutro Dog food, the kind that says guaranteed to promote healthy skin, he has been fine ever since and I've tried all kinds of different dog foods. Good luck!
Reply:Hello..massage him with some Olive Oil, add a teaspoon to his food, no RAW garlic...no baths for sure... dogs can have benadryl - for a few days tops..1/2 mg per lb up to 2 mg every 8 hours which will help with the itching...and when or if you apply any flea drops, just apply them to the base of his tail where the tail meets the body %26amp; center, middle top of neck only...also get him some brewers yeast ( our dogs love'em ) available @ pet stores...they really help with the skin problems %26amp; fleas..also use towels, old cut sheets or blankets for bedding material, that you can wash often %26amp; keep a clean supply of..also boraxing carpets, under beds..is good ( 20 Mule Team in laundry secions) ..Take Care:) E Mail me if you have any questions ,,also I don't mind hearing how things are going with the critters, etc :)
Reply:Take her back to the vet. OR try 'Corti-Care Hydrocortisone by 8 in 1' they come in spray, lotion, and salve.
Reply:could be to much at one time. maybe having an allergic reaction if you use drops and a dip.Try feeding brewers yeast tablets and try making a mixture of tea tree oil and water, and spray lightly on pet (watch the face, can burn the eyes)it is a natural deterrent for fleas. but I would see a different vet or a heath food store owner and inquire about natural methods.

Will the Humane Society euthanize the dog?

I moved into a roommate situation recently and have a problem with the household dog. No one claims to own it personally, nor have they taken any responsibility for its health care in the last 3 years. The dog has an obvious, terrible skin condition with raw looking raised patches, infection all over his tail and even under the fur on his back as well as swollen rawness on his elbows and feet. He smells AWFUL %26amp; the stench has permeated my entire part of the house. He's a nice dog, 3 or 4 yrs of age %26amp; part pitbull. He is still an attractive, sweet pet but I fear if I take him to the Humane Society for adoption they will just put him to sleep. In his current itching and biting state he might not be eligible. I don't have money to get him to the vet, and I feel he deserves to get better. He just sits inside scratching and worrying at himself all day. The rest of the household might not appreciate me having him snuffed, however. Will the HS heal him or consider it a lost cause?

Will the Humane Society euthanize the dog?
Many Humane Societies and shelters have an immediate euthanasia policy when it comes to Pit Bulls and Pit mixes.

Why don't you take him to the vet to be treated instead of the Humane Society?
Reply:They sell stuff at like petsmart for skin conditions i think its like 7 dollars a bottle and that should clear it up or he might just have fleas and scratching himself.
Reply:If it's a kill shelter, the dog will probably be killed in the first 48 hours. Especially because he's an unhealthy pit bull mix.

You can try contacting a pit bull rescue or a no-kill shelter (start here: http://petfinder.com and http://www.pbrc.net/ ) and see if they can take the dog for good.

Right now your roommates are violating the law. You can place a discreet anon. call to Animal Control and they will issue a "fix-it" ticket to your housemates. If they don't get on the ball, either you'll have to by caring for the dog, or taking it to a rescue group.

GL in this hard situation.
Reply:They will try to work with him, give him medical attention and try to place him in a home. Since you don't mention any behavior problems, he should have no problems getting a new home and therefore will not be put down. They usually put dogs with to many behavior problems to sleep.
Reply:The HS may give him the medical care he requires and put him up for adoption.

I would call and ask if they are 'full' or not. If they are, then often highly adoptable pets are euthanized, just because there's no room for them.

Try contacting local rescues, to see if they can help out. (www.petfinder.com)

Sounds like this dog would do best in foster care while he gets the care he needs.
Reply:It depends on what is rong with him. If its only fleas they will get rid of the proublem and adopt him out. If it is something else but easily taken care of then they still may try to adopt him out. If it is a spendy condition they may not have the means to care for him. You also need to be careful of shelter policies if it is a pit mix some selters atomaticly euthenise the dog because they don't want to be liable if the dog later on bites someone. If you can try giving him a flea bath that may be his only proublem. If no one is claming him it may be better to have him euthenised then to sit around in misery like he is.
Reply:Its a shame that a pet would be neglected in the first place to get to this point, And the term having him SNUFFED tells me that there is in-maturity with in that living situation. The humane society can and should press charges of animal cruelty!
Reply:Your best bet is a local private rescue, but that's a tough case. In many county facilities, and probably HS as well, skin conditions are an automatic death sentence. Why? While they can sometimes be fixed easily, sometimes there are multiple causes. From what you say, my best guess would be mange (there are two types, one easily cured, and one not) or flea allergy, plus a bacterial infection that worsens either condition. The reason that they don't usually try with skin conditions is that recovery can take a loooong time. Fur doesn't grow back quickly, and sometimes not at all in these cases, leaving an "iffy" adoption candidate. I have two that have skin conditions, and neither has ever completely resolved. They are still wonderful, wonderful Furkids.

Try googling "dog rescue" including your city or county, and start calling. There's usually someone who will take the really tough cases, but it may take time to find them. For now, can you bathe him? If a Vet visit is out of the question, get an OTC medicated shampoo and an oatmeal conditioner, and you'll be a Christmas Angel to this poor guy. Don't use really hot or cold water, just warm, and no human shampoo, that can dry their skin, and make itching worse. Even a supermarket dog shampoo (one having sulpher might help) would be a relief. He'll also smell better. Thank you for at least thinking of helping him, and I hope you'll take it a bit farther. Happy Holidays,

Margo

My dog is peeing blood?

Hello everyone. Last night my cousin was walking my male bichon frise, he's six years old, and said that he had some blood in his pee. not a lot he said but still there was some. he's had some skin problems in the past, and is really itchy a lot. We're going to take in a urin sample to the vet, but i'm still a bit worried. any suggestions?

My dog is peeing blood?
You are awesome for taking your dog and a urine sample to the

vet. Sounds like you have it together and are a very responsible

dog parent.

He could have a urinary tract infection or a bladder infection.

I would just get your dog to the vet, so they can run a urinalysis and a complete exam, so if he does have a UTI he could be treated with antibiotics also.

Also, did he eat anything out of the ordinary? There are some things dogs and humans eat that can turn our urine to appear as if we have blood.
Reply:just go to the vet and hope for the best

:]
Reply:Could be a UTI... the vet will tell you for sure though.
Reply:this maybe dangerous. if this happens to a human it is also dangerous. it might be internal bleeding. he may have hurt him self really bad.
Reply:the firsth thing you should do is look up animal hospital n the dictionary and then you should go there and ask the specialist there to handle it. do this fast before it is too late.
Reply:we had the same problem with a male cat one time and he had a urinary track infection he had to have surgery but he was fine.
Reply:If Its A Gurl Then Its Normal...Dogs, Just Like Us Have Periods...But Its Called Something Differant...

If thats wut it is it should go away quickly...

but i would still go to the vet just in case thats not wut it is...
Reply:Its probably a urinary track infection or bladder infection, please take your little guy to the vet asap, those really really hurt
Reply:As you bring the urine sample to the vet, take your dog along for the ride. I'm sure your vet will want to examine him as well as his specimen.
Reply:go to the vet and get the vet to check it out go soon it might be serious
Reply:This is a sign of a infection that might of occur recently or weeks ago...the safest way 4 u 2 do is 2 take him 2 a animal hospital and see what they say. But don't worry is could just been a minor cut or inflammation inside of him, and that could be cure easily. hope it helps.
Reply:My dog was doing this a couple years ago. It ended up he was poisoned, but your dog doesn't have any of the other symptoms. Any way, if he is poisoned, don't worry, we saved my dog. Now he's 8 years old! It happened when he was about 5.
Reply:It's most likely a urinary tract infection or kidney infection.

Get him to the vet today to be evaluated.

If you can't get a urine sample then they can get urine from him at the vet, but it will cost you a bit more.
Reply:Stick to the vet and just watch your dog pee over the next 3 weeks or so to see if the blood goes away or is he still peeing blood.
Reply:Either kidney problems, or a UTI. Either way it's just as well you are going to the vet as your dog will become very sick if you don't.
Reply:the vet will know best
Reply:The best thing is to take him to the vet.
Reply:Well if he is looking at the pee at night would'nt you think that he had a bad look at the pee did you even take a good look at his Penis if you did and you are sure that he is pising blood theni think that you did the right thing by taking him to the vet first thing after you found out
Reply:Urinary and/or kidney infecition... most likey.

Antibiotics are a must
Reply:Going to the vet is all you can do in a situatuion like this.

My mums friends dog (confusing =S) peed blood and it turned out to be a kidney problem. She took Abbey to the vet and now she has never been better!

Good Luck, Im sure everything will be fine =] xx
Reply:please take your dog to the vets and get advice on the matter my first rotty was weeing pure blood unfortunately for us he didnt make it,
