Can diabetes in dogs be passed down from the mother to her puppies?

Our mother dog died last June from diabetes and I was wondering if her son can develop diabetes also. It happened so suddenly. She always had skin problems and bad breathe. She gained weigh after we had her spaded. She was never a real active dog. I feel so guilty because I didn't recognize that she was that sick. I don't believe the vet ever checked her for diabetes.

Diabetes in dogs is not that common so it is not unusual that your vet would not have checked her for it. It is possible that diabetes could be inherited in dogs. One of the first signs of canine diabetes is excessive thirst, so keep an eye on the son that you kept and if you notice him drinking more than normal or peeing a lot then you should take him to the vet and let him know the dog's mother died of diabetes so he will check him for it. Good luck.
Reply:if the puppy starts to drink a lot of water the is one of the signs of a problem. i am not sure about being passed from mother to son. you might check with your vet about it
