My dogs have had fleas. Now they have a bigger problem.?

My poor babies have scratched and chewed themselves raw! What can I do to help them. We are getting ready for another round of advantage to try and completely rid them of the fleas, but I'm worried about their skin. It's dry and swollen and they have ripped most of their hair off. What can I do to help them?

You can go to the vet for an injection that will reduce the swelling of the skin, and the itching.

Use Advantage regularly - or switch to Frontline Plus because it kills the flea eggs and larvae as well. Make sure whatever you use gets on the skin of the animal. It's also important to treat you house as this is where most of the fleas are living - get a spray from a vets. Your dogs are allergic to fleas so it's important to get rid of the infestation 100% by attacking it from all possible angles.

Reply:set them free in the wild...... dogs LOVE that.
Reply:Take them to the vet and he will prescribe you a cream

dont be cheap if you were sore and in pain would you want someone to take time and money to help you dont let your dog feel this way cause hey

would you??
Reply:Oatmeal shampoo, skin so soft from Avon and benadryl for a few days. You might want to switch to Frontline
Reply:wow! the only thing i could think of is to get them a flea dip and rid them for good and get some treatment for the skin. Calling a vet and asking is they best you can do for a right answer if not call a local pet and grooming store. This will surely help. I had the same problem with one of my dogs it was terrible.I hope i Helped
Reply:See a vet, they may need to have the rest of their fur trimmed and antibacterial cream rubbed on their bodies.
Reply:I defer to Angels4siberians. Also, the vet may offer a Cortizone shot.
Reply:have you treated your house inside and out? and your yard?

you can't get rid of fleas completely unless you treat home, yard AND dog.

as for their skin, oatmeal bathes might help, it soothes the skin (but ask your vet FIRST!).

Oatmeal stops the irritating itches! there are also soothing sprays you can get from your local pet supply place, or even from your vet.

they could be allergic to the flea dander (poo) and that is what causes them to scratch so badly.

here are some things you could try (again ask your vet first):

Reply:you can put destin on them or a antibiotic ointment on there areas.but the best stuff too buy, you would have to get it in a feed store or call around its called NU-STOCK and what it is is sulfur and you read the directions and put some on the areas and leave it on for days..It will heal they use it for mane also.
Reply:Same thing has happened to my cats. I would use the better stuff which is frontline plus. It kills the whole cycle of the fleas. As for your dogs skin I would buy some soothing spray for rashes. They sell it at Petco and Petsmart. When you go there ask one of the workers what they would suggest. You just have to wait until the flea medicine works. Then your dogs fur will grow back. Good luck!
Reply:Switch to K9 Advantix. In my experience, works better than Frontline and Advantage.

If you can't afford the vet, let's face it, they are expensive. You can go to the pet store and they will know what kind of shampoo you can use. If that doesn't help, then definitely go to the vet. There may be a skin condition, not a flea problem
Reply:DO NOT flea dip them. Flea dips and shampoos contain chemicals which will only aggravate their skin problems further.

I highly recommend you take your dogs to the vet. And FLEA BOMB your house.
Reply:Bless them.

First thing i must say is good luck, and i hope your babies are okay. :]

I have two dogs myself. They're siberian huskies.

We moved house and the house was riddled with fleas.

We immediately got in pest control, which destroyed them.

If you live in england, then you could use Rentakill.

Thats what we used.

Then you will need to sort out the skin damage.

They will need a lot of moiturising cream andd treatment, as this could develop into the hair loss disease - Mange.

And also there is a high risk of infection.

Take them to the vet and get them checked out and prescribed some creams and things.

I hope i helped :].

Good luck.

Hope the dogs are okay.

Ashii :]

Reply:If you take them to the vet they can recommend a shampoo and conditioner and possibly some medication to help calm their skin. Most likely they have an allergy to fleas which can happen. You also need to treat your home as fleas live in the carpeting as well. (http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.js... You need to vaccum your carpet once a week for 4 weeks. The eggs in the carpet will hatch over this time and you can vaccum them up once they are larva. When they are eggs the stick to the carpet. Eventually once the fleas don't have a blood meal they will die over the month. You need to vaccum under chairs, tables, sofas etc. Wash blankets, pillows and dog beds. Treat the yard as well because fleas live in the yard (http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.js...

This shampoo might help: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.js...
