Dalmatian Owners I need advice?

I have a 10 year old male dalmatian and he's been getting sores on his feet and in between his toes for over a year. I took him to the vet the first time he got one and the vet told me that dalmatians tend to have skin problems and that the only way to take care of the sores is to cut them out which would mean to cut part of his toes off. NO!! So, I put him on a good dog food that was recommended by a pet store owner and his skin is still not better. The sores that he gets look like cysts that he licks and licks until they burst and then they go away but eventually come back. They ooze and bleed and he licks them constantly!

The vet also said it's probably not allergies but only a problem with the breed. Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks!

This is called Atopy, it is basically inherited allergies. The reason why your vet says it is common with the breed is because many lines that make up the breed are plagued with allergies. Switch foods, something with a single protein source. A good one to consider is Natural Life's Lamader formula, I have seen it result in miracles.
Reply:do what ever u think is right
Reply:This sounds identical to my neighbors dog who has allergies.

His feet get so raw so quickly in this season. She uses an allergy ointment on his paws and he takes allergy medicine.

I will ask her the name of the products she uses and how he was diagnosed, and I will edit my question after with more information! it is 9 am here right now, and I will talk to her around 3.

**P.S I talked with her and she had to give her dog Benadryl she called the vet with the dogs weight and they told her how much to give him. It makes them so drowsy though, but cuts down on the chewing and licking. They really don't feel good when they are suffering so anything to help the poor guy feel some relief.

Also this is recommended too- Gentocin Topical Spray (Antibiotic/Corticosteroid) It is really helpful they sometimes use it in combination with an antibiotic (because it can so easily become infected) called Gentamicin and the corticosteroid Betamethasone.

I looked it all up after I was told about it and it does sound very beneficial.

I hope this is helpful!

All the best I hope he gets some relief soon!

It sounds like you are on the right track!
Reply:tough one you have there. he's blood needs to be tested for any viral disease he may have.you can also try asking the breeder where you got him and ask if its a common problem to your dalmatian's bloodline. the breeder im sure is familiar with the diseases and sickness history of your dog bloodline and they may provide information thats not readily available with the vet. you may also try to be sensitive with the floor cleaner your using as well as his soap. there are other anit fungal shampoo that may help alleviate what your dog feels. if all else fails and you feel its detrimental for your dog then i suggest you follow the vets advice. otherwise you just may contend yourself with the current situation. Good luck and let mw know what u decide.
Reply:I would say switch vets because, no offense, but your vet sounds like a moron. Cut them off? I mean seriously?

Although he is right that dal's tend to have skin problems.

I wish I could help you more, but I've never had a dal. Sorry.

Best of luck.
Reply:Sounds like allergies. There is allergy testing that can be done. He may also have a staph or skin infection secondary to allergies. May need some antibiotics and some type of steroid to stop the inflammatory response.
Reply:why don't u get him the doggie booties so he can't lick them opened
Reply:i have a 4 year old Dal and had the same problem.

we took him to a vet and he had to wear a cone and he was given a solution which had to be diluted to wash his feet in twice a day until it calmed down.

in the meantime my husband and i spent a few days racking our brains wondering if he was reacting to an allergy, and in the end sussed that Kane (our Dal) was having an allergic reaction to shake 'n' vac from the carpets, parts of it that hadn't quite hoovered up properly.

we stopped using it, and the problem stopped.

he's never had a problem since.

this is NOT a Dalmatian thing, just one of those things.

hope your Dal feels better soon.

good luck
