My dog is always scratching his behind what can i do to fix it ?

I have a 7 month old puppy he has no fleas but he is constantly scratching around his tail and and the top of his back. Im not sure what to do ? I wanted to start giving him fish oils inhopes that it would help with his skin .Has anyone else ever had this problem and if so what did you do. Im not sure if it has anything to do with his breed he's chocolate lab and pitbull . He also has all his shots and has been fixed . Any advise would be nice thank you

My dog is always scratching his behind what can i do to fix it ?
it could be an old bite from a flea that is causing an allergic reaction.

or more probably his anal glands are impacted or he needs to be dewormed again.

sometimes a pup will get into something (say out in your yard or what not) and they will develop worms again.

i would check w/a vet first, just in case it's not some sort of skin irritation or mange..the vet will do a skin culture.

either way i would bathe him w/an oatmeal shampoo until you figure out what is causing his discomfort.

EDIT:

he can get worms more than once...some dogs develop it 2 or 3 times....and there are round worms and hook worms etc. many different kinds. each need to be treated.

but i personally think it might be an allergic reaction to something that bit him, or a skin irritation from a mange or virus.
Reply:Scratch it for him?!
Reply:Could be a hot spot (develops in the area where a flea bite was) This is a common area for them to develop

Treatment consists of (usually) shaving down the area and then using a drying agent. Your vet can prescribe the astringent and also give you meds for itching and even antibiotics if necessary; it is though that the staph bacteria which is always present on skin plays a part. Once the irritation starts the poor dog just cannot leave it alone, it must be miserable.
Reply:It only takes a bite from one flea to cause an allergic reaction in dogs allergic to fleas. Groom this pup well, make sure he is on a flea preventive. You might also be dealing with a food allergy of some sort. Some dogs are even allergic to grass. Talk to your vet. You might want to put him on a lamb and rice diet.
Reply:I know this sounds gross so be ready: Hid anal glands may be impacted. When this happen it can be painful and itchy. Take your dog to either your vet or groomer and explain what is going on and ask them if thats what it could be. I worked summers at a groomers when I was in high school. It is the foulest thing anyone will ever have to do to a dog but they have to squeeze his anus until the stuff comes out. I don't know what it is but be ready for the most horrid smell you can imagine, and don't be behind his butt....it sprays far. YUCK! If left untreated it can cause other problems too so I would just ask my vet. You can do it your self but I would and will always pay someone else to do it.....for any amount of $$
Reply:It could be SO many things.

It's very hard to say..

When you say scratching at his tail, do you mean around his bum? Worms can make that area itch and it won't go away until the worms are gone.

Impacted anal glands could be the problem too, especially if he is scooting and dragging his butt along the floor.

The answer from the girl above is a good one, I've done those myself........NASTY job.

Have you checked for a tick? You probably have if you say he has no fleas.

Maybe he has an allergy to something? Keep an eye on him to see if he starts scratching somewhere else too....

Your vet can probably give you some good ideas

Good luck
Reply:There could be several reasons for this .It could be allergies or a reaction to fleas or dry skin maybe. Get a good medicated shampoo or oatmeal and give him a good bath see if that helps give him some relief if that doesn't work call your vet he may need a shot of steriods. If it were me i'd call the vet first.
Reply:De- worm him he has worms.the vets sell a pill and it goes by weight you most likly need 1 pill since he is still small they are 15.00 each but they kill all worms from ring,Tape,Hook, round and there is one more I can't remember. Most of the time they get worms from Moms milk but they can get them from the dirt too if you have your dog in a pen let him out and spray the ground Ortho sells a insect killer that is not harmful to pets after it drys but you need to de worm him or her every 6 mos. they also sell liquid de wormer too but this pill kills them all Oh the last worm is called whip.call the vet and bring them a stool sample and they will tell you what worms the pup has and give you the pills
Reply:he may not have fleas now, but he may have at one time, and that causes tape worms. scratching around the rectal area is a classic sign of tape worms. take him to your vet and let them take a look!
Reply:Puppies need to be dewormed more than once. And the cheap over the counter stuff does not work. Take you dog to the vet, I know you can afford it if you invested money into his altering and his shots.
