I rescue dogs and cats i currently have 16 dogs and 10 cats. i ran into a problem with a 8yr old boxer?

her name is tasha. I rescued her about 7 years ago found tied to a fire hydrant skin and bones. she is a brindle boxer about 60lbs. yesterday she started a cough that went sort of like this....cough cough cough cough then she threw up yellow stuff. she countinued coughing all day long. she's been eating and drinking the same thing and the only difference is that we rescued a gsd/mix 2 weeks ago and he coughs once in a while but i figured that it was just because he is roughly 14 and was neglected so his nourishing wasn't the best. now i have 2 other gsd that play with him everyday and they don't cough so i figured to rule out kennel cough. her coughing continues but now her puke is foamy white slimmy not yellow. I tried putting my hand in her mouth and throat to feel for an obstruction but everything seems to be o.k. i tried feeding her milk, but nothing happened. she has a temp of 101.9 so i really don't know what it could be. has anyone ever been through something like this before?

Could be a variation of Kennel Cough, which can be serious if not treated. If you have that many strange dogs and cats coming in and out of your home, you need to take all the necessary precautions and quarintine the new dogs and have them checked out by a Vet and given thier shots before you allow them to mingle with the other pets. I would take this dog to the Vet immediately.
Reply:As a rescuer, you should know that at the first sign of any different behavior in a dog you know well, that a vet check should be in order. Rescuer or not, you cannot diagnose/treat things by yourself.

By the way, 8 yr old boxer, that you rescued 7 yrs ago...Are you not actively looking for new homes for these rescue animals? If not, you can and will become overwhelmed eventually. A 1 yr old Boxer would've been rather easy to re-home, after nursed back to a proper weight.
Reply:Sounds like kennel cough, you probably nees to take them both to the vet to get checked. It is VERY contagious and could be spread among your other 16 dogs. Even if they have been vaccinated, they could possibly contract it. The vet will most likely give you an antibiotivc and a cough suppressant. Please call the vet first though and make an appointment because many vets would prefer to do the exam for kenel cough outside simply because it is so contagious and they would have to disinfect the whole clinic afterwards. Good Luck!
Reply:THEY WILL ALL DIE!!!!! infection spreads in kennels fast

they are exposed to tons of bacteria in water, food and various dog messes even toys after a while all your pets

may die and everyone in your house may get real sick.

unless you

Take them all to a vet have them checked.. How did you become a rescuer and not know that..I am gun shy about that

after reading about all the pet collectors out there people who obsessively keep pets and hardly give them the attention and food they need. ...sad

I have looked at your other questions and advise all pet lovers to do so this person may (may make your own decision) be using this site for free advice instead of taking the pet's to a vet's office.

You can't trust what most people tell you on here for every

right answer on here there are 10 wrong answers .

Take them all to a veterinarian or call the ASPCA.

otherwise that dog may have been better off on the hydrant

don't make the dog get that close to death again.

MAKE THE CALL!!!
Reply:I have heard that Heart Worm could show up as a cough. The yellow or white foam is normal empty stomach bile. Dogs do not throw up like cats sometimes do. They can get dehydrated very badly from throwing up. If that is a daily thing, she is not doing well. Although it may be difficult, You may have to find a way to have a vet see her.
Reply:26 dogs and cats are way to many-rescue missions find homes for lost or unwanted pets, not provide them,With 16 dogs there are bound to be sanitation and other health hazards. That,at least in my opinion, borders on animal cruelty. You are not qualified to care for that many animals as your question proves.I suggest you phone a vet.or the SPCA asap.
Reply:I agree with Paintedr. . . . As an animal rescuer you should have a vet on retainer to take care of things like this. . . our local Animal Rescue Shelter has such for the neutering of animals, shots and illnesses.

Are you a legally recognized rescuer or a self appointed rescuer?

If you are self appointed and don't have the proper papers you can be fined and or shut down.

I assume the temp of 101.9 is a rectal temp? Is it a temp taken in the ear with an electronic thermometer? This makes a difference. A rectal temp is 1 degree higher and a temp taken in the ear needs to have a degree added as it is surface temp which is cooler.

101.9 rectally is a pretty normal temp for a dog but on the other hand a temp of 102.9 would be a little high.

Just because the other dogs aren't coughing like this dog doesn't mean they aren't in the beginning stages of kennel cough. . . . . .Take the dog to the vet.
Reply:If you truly care for her, you will get her TO THE VET!!!!

You have no right to have animals unless you are able to PROPERLY care for them. I hope you are aware that BY LAW it is her RIGHT to have medical care -- and to do otherwise is considered abuse.

TO THE VET!
