I have a ringworm problem that isn''t going away. My dog has had it since October 15, it is now December 4. I have taken her to the vet twice. Skin scrap was positive for ringworm for 3 patches on her mussle (one right on her lip where she can lick it). Our vet first put her on Cavamox, 2 pills of Program (given 2wks apart), and topical Tresaderm (twice/day). Well, that only improved it alittle, so then we used (topical) Clotrimozole and held her mussle shut for 5-10 minutes (3 times a day). It has gotten better but still not gone. Our vet didn''t give any other advice for getting rid of it finally for good. So..my question is, is there something else I can give her or do that will clear it up quickly? I wonder if I could use human products on her because she can lick them, or somekind of home remedy? Also, how do I know it is gone, what do I look for? Thank you for your time, it is greatly apreciated!

Dog ringworm quick cures???
Make sure you continue the treatment 10 days after the ringworm looks like it's disappearing – you don't want an outbreak a few days after stopping treatment. Ringworm if not treated will break the skin lining and eventually lead to the loss of hair. These circular hairless patches will spread and since this is a fungus it is contagious.
One treatment is to mix one pint of bleach chlorine with 1 gallon of water and apply to affected area. keep doing this and it should disappear within a few days. REMEMBER clorox bleach is a safe and effective killer of just about anything and it does work.

Reply:Go to the store and buy Lamisil spray for humans. Atheletes foot spray. Cures ringworm. Spray on do twice a day. give about a week and a half. should work.
Reply:I had this same problem this summer with my dogs and someone told me iodine and I used it and it works. I told the vet this and he said it was fine. I just put the iodine directly on the spots and it made the spots crust over and fall off. PLus I bought a iodine shampoo from Petsmart. It worked for me.

Reply:Actually my dog had this same problem--the Program has to be taken in large doses to kill the ring worm. My dog was around 28 pounds at the time and she had to take 6 pills on a full stomach--2 weeks apart.
It will take some time for the skin to heal so be patient.
Ringworm is the exact same fungus as athletes foot or jock itch...
My vet told me in worst case they would shave her and take more drastic action. Not a pretty thought for a Golden Retriever.
Reply:there is no quick fix for ringworm. It can take months to clear up. usually the vet will start the dog on an antifungal oral mediction not just a topical. either contact your vet for an antifungal oral med. or find a new vet
Reply:I would recommend the following:
1. Purchase an E-COLLAR at your vet office. It looks like a lamp shade. These E-Collars are used for dogs that have had surgery as it prevents them from licking their wounds or taking out stitches. At first your dog will not like the e-collar but will get used to it and learn to give itself more space when walking around in the house. This will prevent your dog from licking the infected area.
2. Is your dog on heart worm preventative medicine? If not have your vet do a simple blood test (must be a full occult blood test....not a screen or slide test) to see if your dog has heart worm or not. If not, you need to have your dog put on HEART GUARD PLUS. This is given once a month and protects your dog from many infestations such as those nasty worms and internal parasites.
3. Since your dog has been verified that it has ring worm, you will need to use Clorox and clean your dogs kennel, and mop your floors with Clorox as this will get rid of it in your home. Also if your dog has bedding, you need to launder it with a detergent that has disinfectant in it.

Reply:The ABSOLUTE WORST thing you can do for a dog with ringworm is shave it. That is only going to spread spores EVERYWHERE.
Ask your vet about Intraconazole. Its a once daily liquid medication for treating ringworm. That's what I used with my dog who had a very nasty case of it.
You'll also need to bleach everything possible, anything not bleachable spray with Lysol. This will kill those spores, which can live up to 6 months in even freezing temperatures.
Keep your dog contained to one area of the home while you are treating ringworm to keep it easier to manage spore spread. Bleach and Lysol this area at least once weekly while treating.
Be sure to wash your hands thoroughly after handling your dog as well. When I was dealing with ringworm I would wear clothes over my clothes, the top layer went immediately into the wash after handling the dog.
I don't recommend using any over the counter meds, simply because she can lick it, and that's not a good thing.
You can monitor progress, and also find spores in the house using a black light. Turn the lights off, and turn on the black light. Areas contaminated with ringworm will glow candy apple green. However I wouldn't consider her fully treated until the vet performs another skin scraping and also finds her clear that way.
Ringworm is highly contagious. If you begin to get red itchy patches, cover them with a band aid and see your doctor. The band aid will help keep the spores contained.
Ringworm is a nasty little bugger, it can take awhile for it to be successfully treated. You need to treat the dog and "break the cycle" as well by killing off as many spores as possible.
