Why don't people research the Shar-Pei more before running it down why so narrow minded?

The Shar-Pei is a gentle dog just like any other if raised by decent people they dont have any,ore problems than a normal dog all you people need to speak to reliable breeders not byb who cross the breed and give it a bad reputation, there are some dodgy breeders out there as in all breeds so get your facts right before giving this lovely breed a bad name as for smelly house maybe some house keeping? Shgar-Pei are not a dirty animal , they can have skin problems if not washed in soap free shampoo ,only need bathing once a month , and a good breeder even a non registered one would NEVER sell a 5 week old puppy, and would have ther eyes checked at 6 weeks by a vet, eye tacking is sometimes necessary in overly wrinkled pups and would cost at the MOST $200 they are an intelligent breed, excellent with children and good with all animals if socialised properly, like all animals. Mis treat them and you pay for it, treated with respect you have a friend for life

Why don't people research the Shar-Pei more before running it down why so narrow minded?
My husband and I used to breed registered Shar-Peis back in the 80's before they became so popular. At that time, there were still relatively few purebreds in the country, all of which descended from the same 6 dogs rescued from China.

Because the gene pool was so concentrated, it was extremely critical to breed only those animals that did not show the aggressive tendencies the breed was originally known to possess. The result was a gentle dog exhibiting intelligence, loyalty, and a love of family with a truly unique appearance.

At the same time, we were breeding for healthy dogs. Dogs showing hereditary shortcomings both physically and mentally were spayed or neutered so as not to continue the problems in later generations.

In a perfect world, the breed would have continued to evolve into the perfect family pet. In a perfect world.

Some backyard breeders and puppy mills decided to jump on the bandwagon with the intention of profit. They would get their hands on an intact pet-quality dog and breed it to the first intact dog they could find of the opposite gender. Sometimes the crosses went well, sometimes they didn't.

A respectable breeder would have culled any pups that didn't measure up to the breed standard we were striving for. Those bybs and mills would just continue to produce pups for the money, not caring that they were undoing what the rest of us had worked so hard for. We stopped breeding because of this.

Now you see Shar-Peis and mixes thereof everywhere. The shelters are full of them and you'd be hard-pressed to give one away. These dogs are the result of the unscrupulous breeding, and very likely the source of the controversy. A really GOOD, well-bred Shar-Pei is in a totally different category, but much harder to find.

All breeds of dogs have "good" individuals and "bad." If people would just be more careful in breeding and selecting, we'd be seeing more of the good ones.
Reply:Right on. I don't know any shar-peis personally, and didn't know the bad rep until recently, but there's no reason any breed should be marked down because of a few bad examples cause by overbreeding while the breed was overly popular.
Reply:People are stupid sheep who believe just about any trash that come spewing out of any morons mouth.
Reply:I have always likes Shar-Peis but they can be "too much dog" for most people to handle. They are strong willed and independent. There is nothing wrong with that, some people love dogs with that kind of personality. But some people can't handle big, strong minded dogs like them. I know I could but there are many people who are afraid of all dogs bigger than 30 pounds.
Reply:i work at a vet clinic and this breed is just like any other breed or mix breed for the most part they are good pets, just ask their owners, and they do have a higher rate of skin conditions but this is not the only breed that has its problems, Shar-Pei, require owners who under stand the breed and can keep the skin clean with special products, they are not for the neglectful pet owner. eye tacking is usually necessary for the breed , but you are right , each person has their preferences when it comes to the breeds they like and should respect that everyone has the right to choose
Reply:You tell them!!!

BYB are a problem for all breeds

Bad owners....... cause bad reputation for lots of different breeds.

Good owners.......... you end up with gently, loving, loyal part of the family!

I love the Shar-pei...........
Reply:I agree i dont know why people are stupid when it comes to this breed. i own/raise/breed/show/train this breed for many many years and i dont understand how many people out there give them a bad name without actually knowing this breed. i dont do that and i have had a very bad experience with a lab and i dont knock the breed. my pups dont leave my home till 8-9wks of age (all parents have all nessisary health testing before ever being breed, and are titled) all pups go to vet at 2wks of age and every wk there after (to keep up with the eyes just in case) eye tacking costs me $40 usually thats enough to correct a issue. ive never had a pup need entropian surgery yet. and had 5 pups in total ever needing eye tacking. .you do not need to wash them often.they are extremly easy to house break and train. great with people, kids, other animals. if you take the time and socialize your puppy you will have a nice adult as long as the owner keeps up with socializing and treats the animal with love like every other breed out there. every breed has there own issues but it doesnt mean your dog will does it? im speaking from experience and several years of breeding and i have kept contact with every single person who has one of my pei's. yes there can be problems like with any breed but dont put that one every pei cause not every pei has issues. research your breeder before ever buying a puppy. research genetics, health etc as well. and always talk to past customers . and also for all the people who think they are vicious... im sorry you had a bad experience but dont judge a breed judge the owner.
