My dog cannot go to the park?

I have a 5 year old dog cross lab with staff she is lovely but suffers with a skin disorder for which i have to take her to the vets who gives me antibiotics and steroids for a few weeks. My problem is every time we go to the park she starts to scratch and after a few days her skin is very red and sore, any ideas what i can do or has anyone else got this problem. I dont mind walking the steets with her but i know she would love to go to the park plus it would do her good to have a good run. cheers for any help you can give me.

My dog cannot go to the park?
sounds like it may be allergies. she is mixed with a lab and they are known to develop allergies. check with your vet to see if he/she could do an allergy test on her to see exactly what she's allergic to if anything. I had a lab that was allergic to almost everything but people and cats and had to have allergy medication every day. Good luck!
Reply:maybe she has allergies - like from plants or bugs...?
Reply:Have you tried changing her food? I would put her on a non-allergic, human grade, baked formula like the Fish and Chips from http://www.frrco.com/121668

There may be pesticides, or some other chemical or plant matter in the park that irritates her condition.

Is she spayed? Sometimes having your dog spayed helps with skin problems by regulating hormones.

Good luck!

Reply:It's possible that she has allergies. Is she on any type of flea preventative (i.e. Revolution, FrontLine, etc?) Next time you visit your vet make sure you ask about this. Keep a journal with any info you can to help the vet out-how long after the park visit, if she got into any bushes or other plants, etc. Good luck, I hope she'll be okay.
Reply:I take my three dogs to the park which they also dearly love. Outside of my park there are hoses where you can rinse your dogs off. I give mine baths and that seems to help keep them from picking up anything that could irritate a sensitive dog.

Also, you might want to try switching your dog food gradually and try something like Nature's Recipe Venison and Rice or another brand that is good but is Venison. Dogs with allergies often do great on this food. I use that food because one of my dogs has a skin condition which is a lot better since I changed her food and added 3V Skin Caps, a supplement from the Vet.

I also bathe her in a homemade shampoo for sensitive skin but check with your Vet for a recommended shampoo.
Reply:Well there must be something in the park that she is allergic to. There are several different allergy tests that your vet can perform

(simple blood test) which will allow you to see what things your pet reacts to.

For example: Some grasses, definately some dog food ingredients, dust etc., it's like allergies in humans.

You may also want to look at the ingredients in the dog food and treats you are providing your dog with as well. Hope this helps.

You may want to consider a veterinary dermatologist for your dog. Good Luck.
