A question about dog's and fle allergies, vets preferably!?

O.k., here's the 411 on my dog. She has a severe skin allergy to fleas, basically, if one flea bites her, she swells up and stuff. We have her currently on antibiotics and we use advantage, and we make sure to keep that on her regularly.

Here's the problem I'm having. Apparently, the fleas are botheren her ears. She won't stop flappen her ears! And the fact of the matter is she did the flapping so much it broke a blood vessel. Just so you guys are aware THE FLAPPING IS NOT DUE TO EAR MITES, OR ANY TYPE OF BUG IN THE EAR. It is due to her flea allergy. We've got her on anti biotics, but the question I have, is how to get her to stop flappen her ears all the time?? If you need additional info, please feel free to e mail me. She is a lab, and she's six years old. Thanks.

I have a dog with allergies.. all it takes is one flea to flare her up. I would ask your vet/pet store about a topical anti-itch spray. I found one with lidocaine in it that has been pretty effective. You can also give your dog benadryl for itching.

Consider that she may have other allergies.. grass, pollen, food..

Also, if you aren't already: add some essential fatty acid oil to her food.. fish oil, flax oil, wheat germ oil (can be found online or at health food store), etc... very healing for skin problems. And give her some high quality food for dogs with allergies. Try to find some thing without by-products, fillers, and things you can't pronounce. Good food will lighten the load on a stressed immune system.

Doing these things along with flea treatment helped my dog immensely.
Reply:I am assuming the dog was checked by a vet and any sort of infection has been ruled out. Because Labs are just so prone to them. If fleas are the problem I would recommend getting the dog dipped. You have to bomb your house and dogs area as well. Vacuum at least two times a day. The only way to get rid of the head shaking is to get rid of the fleas.(according to your question) Get an exterminator if need be. Good Luck.
Reply:If you are 100% sure that there is no flea on her and her eaction is allergic maybe you can use some local antihistamines for her ears. By the way it may be an ear infection an otitis perhaps regardless the fleas. So please take her to a vet and have her properly examined.
