Why does my dog keep itching himself?

For a few days now, my dog (12lb. rat terrier) has been itching and biting himself none stop. He begs to be scratched and I've checked him for fleas and ticks (we've never had a problem with either) and he's clean. I thought it may be dry skin so I washed him with skin moisturizing shampoo and he's still going itch crazy.

What's the deal with my dog and what can I do to help?

Why does my dog keep itching himself?
Since this is fairly new thing going on I would suggest you rack your brain for something new/different in his environment. Could be something as simple as using Febreeze, carpet spray/powder or different detergent.

With winter and using heat it may be a dry skin situation. Someone suggested the Benadryl and that will help the non stop chewing while you investigate possible cause. If continues I would consult your vet. Please do not let them put him on steroids!!! Too many vets over do the steroids for itching dogs. The Benadryl would be far safer.

I suspect the cause is in your house, carpet or bedding and a change with cleaners/room deodorizers.

The tea tree anti itch sprays do work!! Sold pet supply area with shampoos/condtioners.
Reply:Maybe he's allergic to something...
Reply:take him to a vet, he may have a skin disease or be allergic to something.in the fall my dog has to get medicine because she has allergies
Reply:Fleas (you may have missed them, as all it takes are 1 or 2 to make some itch like crazy)? Allergies? Dry skin?

My guess is fleas or allergies. A trip to the vet would be the best.
Reply:It could be a number of things ranging from stress to mange. I recommend taking it to a vet.
Reply:dry skin, its winter, its pretty chronic in people and animals. once there is more moisture in the air, he'll stop. try a humidifyer if you're that concerned.
Reply:He could have allergies to something. The Vet can help him. Poor dog, having to scratching so much.
Reply:Allergies, fleas, dry skin, could also be the diet making him have dry skin..

put dog on Nutro Max, it is great for coats and skin.....no dry skin and enhances the coats.

My Min. Schnauzers loves it and never sick, and have great coats and skin, and it also makes for less stools.

could be from shampoo...

Reply:hes probobly allergic 2 something, maybe the shampoo i would give him another bath and make sure u rinse him very very well most doggy shampoos r concentrated so dont use alot and use oatmeal shampoo its the best for dogs if hes still itchy take him 2 the vet good luck
Reply:FIRST OF ALL GIVE THE POOR BEAST SOME RELIEF, 1/2 A BENEDRYL [OR DIPHENHYDRAMINE] 1 MG PER POUND.SECOND IF YOU GAVE HIM A BATH DID YOU RINSE HIM THOROUGHLY? ARE YOU SURE?

DOES HE HAVE ANY DARK DANDRUFF ON HIS HIND END. HAVE YOU BEEN USING ANY NEW CHEMICALS IN THE HOUSE?I RECCOMEND USING FRONTLINE ALL YEAROUND.
Reply:Theres alot of things. but i for one just go to the vet.

OR you can get these anti-itch wipes at petco or petsmart. just rub them on the spot your dog seems to be scratching at.
Reply:i cant take care of my own self....than what abt d pets
