How do you get rid of the back dog smell?

I just got a beautiful golden retriever mix from the shelter and I absolutely love him. The only problem is I am not used to "dog smell", as I have never owned a dog before. I have been advised to bathe him once a month since we don't want to dry his skin out. Is there any other way to get rid of the dog smell? I can probably get used to it, but I prefer to keep my house smelling nice so I would appreciate any advice! The air freshners usually just mask the odors. Thanks!

Good for you for adopting! It is actually a common misconception that if you bathe a dog too often, its skin will dry out. Just think of how quickly his coat gets shiny again after you bathe him. In fact, baths probably help keep the skin in good condition by removing drying dust and dirt. Use very mild shampoo (dog shampoo or tearless baby shampoo) and you won't have to worry about irritating his skin.

Especially since your beloved has a long, thick coat, you may not be getting all the way down to the skin when you shampoo him. I've found that with my Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, who has a short coat but thick fur, it helps to dilute the shampoo a little with water so that its seeps in better (of course, you have to rinse very thoroughly).

Good luck!
Reply:In general, you can use your common sense to judge when your dog needs bathing. If you're concerned about causing dry skin, there are moisturizing treatments available at most pet stores, which you rub into your dog's skin after you shampoo him. If your dog seems uncomfortable or shows signs of skin problems, consult your veterinarian.

My husband and I used to drive a semi and we took our schnauzers with us. My female would SWEAT and get stinky doing nothing more than riding in the truck and getting out to potty and play a little. I could not stand the smell in the cab of our truck and there weren't places to bathe her that often. We bought some special made doggy cologne that helped and she loved to wear it. It helped until we could get home for a bath or made other arrangements. I believe we bought it at PETSMART.

Good luck and congratulations on your new POOCH :)
Reply:more fool you for getting a dog.

they bark, and they turd everywhere.

please keep it inside your house.
Reply:If you use dog shampoo and rinse very well, there should not be a problem with dry skin. Watch him in the yard and see if he rolled in anything. Most dogs don't have a strong doggy smell.

If they do, you need to have vet check anal glands(they may be

impacted), also some skin infections can have a horrible smell.
Reply:Good on you for adopting!, if your dog lives outside you wont get rid of doggie smell very easily, your better off keeping indoors at night or in an area that is well sheltered like the laundry at night, in this envioroment bedding should be washed regularly 1 - 2 times a month, i found the best bedding for large dog called "snooza buddy bed" its fully machine washable, wash dog 1 - 2 times a month preferebly at a doggie wash, if weather is good you can do yourself use a product called fidos everyday shampoo, its soap free and they smell like bubble gum, then when dry spray with a grooming spray in a talc scent all over and on bedding, i use aristo pet final touch cologne, you can spray whenever you want on dog and bedding, you can also get a dog coat in colder months and that stops them from smelling and keeps them warm, i have a labrador and her coat looks amazing, she sleeps indoor at night and has a kennel outside during day i just put her snooza bed in there if its going to rain and then bring it in at night if its nice weather i just put the whole bed outside and she doesnt smell, hope this helps.
