Worried about my dog?

I've had this horrible feeling that my dog will die before I graduate higschool. It's just this horrible feeling that I have had since maybe two months ago. My dog is a West highland white terrier and he'll be 11years old in June. But the thing he doesn't even act his age. He still runs around, isn't blind,no hearing loss I believe. The only problem he has is that he's like a pound overweight(not bad), and that he has SKIN CANCER. We went to the doctors and he said that he couldn't do anything until the little bumps on his skin are bigger then a pinky nail and/or turn a dark brown sort of color. But he even with that he still acts like a puppy(sure he sleeps a lot of coarse, but when ever he is awake he jumps around and is super hyper.) I'm really close to CAsper( that's his name) and i'm so scared that he's going to pass away soon. I need true opinions on how long my dog might live and if my feelings are true or not.

Worried about my dog?
Hi. I can really feel how much you love Casper. My dog is 16 yrs old and she also still acts like puppy, although she sleeps alot, she can still run and stand on her hind legs. At times I'm so scared of her dying, but I come to realise that I should be enjoying her companionship while she is still a healthy and happy girl instead of worrying. Don't worry, concentrate on being a good friend to Casper.
Reply:hun all things will pass its jus a part of life stop worry about him dying because u r missing out on the time u have to spend with him..yes he will die but it maybe yrs from now enjoy him as much as u can he will be fine
Reply:So sorry about your dogs health. He sounds fine though. Enjoy him while you have him, they can sense sadness. I bet he will still be around for you when you graduate college. Good luck. Don't worry about things we have no control over.
Reply:Nobody really knows, but he sounds like he is doing pretty darn good. My dog had cancer lumps and lived for a couple years, so its probably not going to take him down quick. I know that is difficult to think of the loss, but enjoy the time you have with him.
Reply:First of all, calm down and realize that the dog is doing very well right now. Skin cancer isn't a death sentence, and the vet would have told you if it was life threatening.

I have a dog who had major jaw surgery 2 years ago for an aggressive bone cancer. The vet told me he would likely die within 6 months to a year. My dog is now almost 15 years old and doing fine - 2 years later, with no re-occurrence of the cancer. So try not to obsess over it - just enjoy your time with your dog and you'll both be happier. :-)
Reply:I know how you feel. My dogs are my babies and I can't imagine life without them. I lost my Corgi mix a couple of years ago and it was terrible but he was 19 YEARS OLD, If your pup is acting that way and you take good care of him (vet visits, good food, lots of attention) you will get a few more good years of him. Probably 13 or 14. You'll know when it's time to let him go. He'll tell you and then you have to know in your heart that you are doing the right thing thing him. You'll eliminate his pain and let him go to a better place. But for now, focus on the good and enjoy the time you have together.
Reply:just enjoy your time with ur dog if its true that dogs go to heaven also i am sure he will bring with him your love you have for him
Reply:Hi~

I can say that I went through a period where my dog (Scottish T.) was having some swollen lymph nodes. The vet scared me!!

I became certain that death was around the corner. I swear I started spoiling him even more and catering to him like he was at deaths door.

Due to a simple drop in at another Vet clinic for a grooming. My dog was examined by a Vet that happened to be an older gentleman. While he examined my dog I burst forth with the whole worried story. He assured me that my dog was far, far, from death. That test results can be wrong and the best way to assure myself of my dogs health is his attitude. A happy running, eating, drinking, loving, doing as always dog, is not sick!!

I was so thankful I almost cried!

This was over a year and a half ago. He is 9 years old now and still just as healthy as ever.

Enjoy your beloved Casper for everyday that you have. Try not to worry yourself sick over this. Some Vets are sort of reactionary types. But modern Vet techniques are incredible.

Love, to you and Casper.
Reply:Ah honey, I wish there was something I could say that would take away all your worries, but I'm not a vet and I'm not psychic. Take your dog to a different vet for a second opinion. That might give you a little more information. But as far truly knowing how long your dog might live, no one can give you that answer. The best thing you can do for yourself (and your dog!), is to treat him as if he's not got any sort of disease. You have no control over his illness or how long he will live. You DO have control over how you are reacting to this, and worrying so much about it will just diminish the happy times you could be having with your dog. I know it's hard not to worry, but your dog will sense your anxiety and that's not good for him or you. Please just be his loving companion and have fun with him. He's acting like a puppy so he's not hurting or anything. That's a good thing!
Reply:Please don't worry about Casper. Just enjoy him.I have had dogs that lived over 14 years old.I have a poodle that just had a stroke and she will turn 13 years old in 2 days. She can't walk and she is going blind. It sounds like your Casper is still going strong sooooo just stop thinking about it and play with him,
Reply:Best not to worry about the end. Enjoy the time you have left with him.
