Is it a good idea to give evening primrose oil to my 1 year old Lab retriever?

Blondie, my 1 yr old yellow Lab retreiver has a nice shiny coat. However she is prone to skin problems and sometimes likes to bite and scratch herself. She has not stopped shedding since we got her home. Blondie is an otherwise healthy dog. I have heard that EPO is a good treatment for skin related ailments in dogs. Should I give it to an otherwise healthy dog? If yes, how much and for how long?

The best oils for anti-inflammatory purposes are thought to be fish oils. The n-3 omega fatty acids are the most directly responsible for anti-inflammatory purposes. There are times when the addition of any oil seems to help skin problems. The linolenic acid in primrose oil is thought to be helpful for some skin conditions but if you can find a marine fish oil source, it would probably be the most helpful.

Below is the link where I found the info above and it also has Q %26amp; A for dog itchies with some specific questions pertaining to retrievers.
Reply:no way. please don't do that.
Reply:Well i am not a DR but i have a dog who is always itching...and we feed her regular oatmeal 2x per week and it has really helped.... good luck
Reply:NO! Crack a fresh egg and mix it with his food. He'll love you for it.
Reply:No, I don't think you should give your dog that. I would recommend getting your dog allergy tested. My dog always scratched and had skin problems. Then we got him allergy tested and we found out that he is allergic to grass and human dander! You could never get rid of the allergies unless you give them shots monthly. It is totally harmless and it helps a lot. He barley ever scratches anymore. hope this helps!
