Problem pom?

my little pom is a very picky eater... i have tried everything and in the end realized that this little brat only wants to eat whats unhealthy for him and what my family eats... i give him his dog food.. he sniffs it and walks away.. i take it away 10 min later and give it back to him twice day... it's to a point where he hasn't eaten anything in 4 days.!!! he's still active... drinks water , plays , begs at the table.. but when it comes to eating his own food he backs off.... he hates dry food.. so we started him on canned ( holistic)... he ate it for a few days and then decided to stop eating it.. my mom boiled chicken and rice for him.. he loves it.. but when i tried mixing in a little bit of the canned food into the rice he refused to eat it... im desperate to find a way to get this little dog to eat normal... i just got him a month ago.. he;s 2 yrs old and apparently his previous owner didnt have any problems with him even tho he was skin and bones when i got him... help me plss

Problem pom?
Usually I've been told that they'll eventually eat when they're hungry. That boiled chicken and rice thing gets old after a while, I used to have to feed that to my dogs when they were sick to their stomachs! It may be time to call a vet to get suggestions!
Reply:maybe he's allergic to canned food?
Reply:You and your mom have trained the dog well. If he holds out something better will come. And it does.

Pick what you want him to eat and give it to him for 20 minutes. Pick it up and feed him NOTHING until the next feeding time. Put the food down again and give him the 20 minutes. Pick it up.

This is a contest of wills and a 5 pound dogs is beating you. Get tough. A normal dog will not starve itself to death. Speak to your vet about this.

Since this is a small dog you want to be sure you are offering a high quality diet. They do not eat much so you want what they do eat to be good stuff.

Good luck.
Reply:Try cat food some dogs like it
Reply:Eucanuba is by Iams and is a dry food that is liked by lots of dogs. Try boiling beef heart and putting it through a grinder and add a little water to the dry dog food and add some beef heart to it.
Reply:I know this answer is a bit long winded, but I thought it might help if I told you specifically what help me feed my poms, they didn't eat well the first mo or so after I brought them home, they get very attached to owners and take a bit to readjust.

I have 2 Poms, Purebred toys... and they can be picky too. Here's what I do maybe it will work for you too.

I no longer buy canned dog food, but I do buy canned kitty food in particular.. lamb and rice, turkey w/ cheese, chicken and tuna, none of them ground up, the kind w/ small chunks. The kitty tender-bite size is better fit for thier small mouths than canned dog food. I have 3 cats and 2 dogs, and it's very difficult to keep each food separate so I buy the CostCo Kirkland Super Premium Dry Cat food( 30% protein from meat not ground corn/soy) and the Super Premium Small Dog Dry Dog Food(27% protein from meat and not ground corn/soy etc.) I mix them together and that's what everybody eats. The kirkland brand is amazingly high quality, and well liked by all 5 animals.

As to the timing.. I always have dry food and water down at all times. The soft food is fed twice a day, I usually mix some extra home cooked rice in w/ the canned kitty food for extra carbs for the dogs, and cats are carniverous and don't need carbs like dogs do. My dogs are put in a kennel at night, and let out to go potty in the morning. They don't usually eat well right after getting up, they eat better a few hours after I let them out.

I also change it up a bit and offer fresh cooked chicken and rice, I also scramble eggs and mix in cottage cheese. When I cook for the dogs, I add a bit of garlic seasoning.. (not garlic salt) dogs love the flavor and a bit of garlic is good for everyone's system. (just maybe not the breath!)

Good luck and you can email me if need more k?
Reply:It's easy to give in to the little ones. I have been around dozens of little dogs, many Poms. Just be consistent, if you dog won't eat after 7 days and you know that no one is feeding him, then you can worry. But first thing is you got him one month ago, he is still trying to fit in, and his desire not to eat dog food is just a desire not to eat. He eats treats of course, think of you 7 year old child being given ice cream all day, but won't eat his vegetables. Kinda sounds funny, but it's the same to dogs. I wouldn't eat my vegetables if i was served ice cream all day and didn't know vegetables were good for me. Dogs don't know, they just know that treats are better then food, and they can wait a couple of days for it.
