Why does my dog scratch so much?

I have a little 35lb. Carolina Dog, and she has a scratching problem. She's flea free, and is bathed about once a month. Our vet says that her skin isn't dry, but he went ahead and put her on some doggie anti-histamines, which haven't helped.

We've tried switching from plastic food bowls, which can carry allergens, we've had her anal glands emptied, and we've also upped her exercise, to keep her mind elsewhere.

I'd love to hear some suggestions from folks who may have had the same sort of problem.

Why does my dog scratch so much?
It sounds like your dog definitely has skin allergies. Our dog has the same thing. We put him on a food trial at the recommendation of our vet to eliminate foods that he might be allergic to. That combined with trying several anti histamines until we found one that worked. We also bathe him at least every other week using a shampoo for sensitive skin and we use extra conditioner to help keep his skin moisturized. it is very difficult to pin point what a dog is allergic to you have to go through a process of elimination. The best thing you can do is continue to work closely with your vet to find out what your dog is allergic to. To help your dog be more comfortable you can use anti itch sprays, wipes, and lotions. Our dog gets especially itchy on his tummy and ears and gladly rolls over for us to rub in the anti itch lotion. Also, baths are very soothing if your dog is really itchy. I hope this info helps!! Good luck!!
Reply:I have three dogs. All have allergies they scratch really hard, their eyes water, and they lick their feet alot. The best thing is just to keep them inside as much as possible and not let them roll or walk through the grass because when they walk through the grass the pollen is on their feet and then they scratch and get it on their body. Benidryl also helps a ton. I hope this helps.
Reply:You could take her to a canine allergist to see exactly what she is allergic to. It definitely sounds like an allergy.
Reply:It may be a food allergy, many dogs are allergic to corn and wheat products. Make sure you read all the ingredients in her food.
Reply:I have a dog who scratches like crazy.I think it hurts to scratch even because he scratches too much.I give him everything that you gave your dog and it hasen't helped either.I went to the vet and he said no problem.WEIRD!Well I massage him and it kinda works he'll stop scratching. And I patiently check all his skin to look for bugs and I find the same kind of bugs everytime.I killed about 10 of them and he stopped scratching.I dont know what kind of bug is it but im going to catch another one on my dog and send it to the doctor to see what kind of bug is it.
Reply:Have you considered food allergies?? Talked with a dermatologist?? I think this would be the next step to figure out what is going on with you dog.

Even if you don't see fleas on her, it only takes one bite from a flea to set off a chain reaction of scratching. Do you use topical flea and tick control??

What about her bedding? Is she outside and have straw, or chips in her area?? If you have bedding inside is it washed regularly and in what. She could be allergic to the laudry detergent. Are you using a mild shampoo. May need to go to a hypoallergenic shampoo. It may take some trial and error to figure this out.

But I think a consult with a dermatologist would be beneficial.

Good luck
