Best answer gets the point =)

Do you mean the skin is red? If so, he's created a 'hot spot'. This is an area of raw, inflamed skin that continues to irritate the dog so he continues to lick/chew it, and creates a vicious cycle. It can be treated, but the first step is to figure out what caused it. Most likely is fleas.

Many dogs have reactions to fleas, even one flea bite can cause an allergic reaction where the poor dog goes nuts, with severe itching. They'll chew themselves raw trying to stop that flea from biting. You might not see any fleas because the dog is doing such a good job at catching them, but he's ruining his skin and fur in the process.

Step one, of course, is to get him on a good topical flea/tick preventative, such as Frontline Plus or Advantix, or BioSpot. The first two are available in most pet stores, BioSpot is less common but can be found in some pet stores or feed stores.

At the pet store, ask for a 'hot spot' treatment. There are several ointments/lotions available that help soothe and dry the inflamed skin so the dog will quit worrying it. You may need an e-collar which goes around his neck (aka a 'cone') so that he can't bite the area any more. Otherwise he won't give it a chance to heal.

Good luck!
Reply:Thank you! Report It

Reply:he may have mange... that would explain the hair falling off... i would take him to the vet asap just incase it is something that severe...
Reply:Fleas or maybe a tick.
Reply:Could be many things, your vet will know the best... could be something as simple as a skin irritation, or something as serious as cancer...
Reply:the redness and roughness of the skin and loss of hair all indicate possible mange or skin condition. pls get your pet to the vet as soon as possible. this is miserable for him.
Reply:That's very common in dogs with a bad flea infestation.

The rough skin can be caused by the dog constantly biting.

Take him to the vet and get it looked at.
Reply:I suggest a trip top the vet to determine the problem and learn what to do for it.
Reply:Your dog probably has a rash...

might be more serious though...

so I would check with the vet...

Just in case....

So...

Do I get the point???

lol
Reply:It might be a wort. Try putting a small piece of duct tape on it and change it every day till it comes down.
