Has anyone heard of a GPRS / GPS chip that can be implanted in a dog for tracking purposes!?

Dog theft is such a problem a chip with GPRS / GPS facility would be an amazing thing to have. We already implant our dogs with the name chips but surely this is the next step? I know you can attach them to collars but theives can take these off. One under the skin would be better. We'll know where our dog is all the time!

Has anyone heard of a GPRS / GPS chip that can be implanted in a dog for tracking purposes!?
There is a company which, once upon a time, developed a GPS system which could in fact be slipped under the skin of animals as the microchip currently are. These devices would allow you to track your dog (or any animal) to within 1 yard of their location - much like the lo-jack systems in vehicles. This magnificent technology had so many possibilities - testing was being done to develop versions that could be used for children and those with Alzheimers, etc. How terrific to have a way to keep those individuals safe and to get your pet back immediately when they've wandered off, right? Well, apparently not right! The ACLU-type idiots and those who are freaked about "personal rights" raised a stink about how it could be used in terrible ways (for instance, wouldn't it be awful if we always knew the whereabouts of a child molester? heavens, we wouldn't want to invade their privacy!) Thus, like many sad stories, this company knew better than to risk it's livelihood on the US justice system when they were sued for heaven-knows-what ....... They currently make only the scannable microchips. But the answer to your question is simply YES! the technology does exist, and has for many, many years, but without people taking a stand, it will never see the light of day. Perhaps if the parents, friends, etc., of all the missing CHILDREN in the US got together, we may someday see this great technology available to both people and pets .....

Reply:My vet said this is an idea for the next step, but it is not available yet. However, i am in Greece, in the US there is no telling what you can find. By the way, I am interested in the devices you can attach to the collar. I am not afraid of my dog being stolen, but he may run away. Do you know if I can get one on the internet?
Reply:Yes, it was the news once. I think you can ask your vet about it and the chip itself is injected by the vet. So i think you will get more info from your local vet.
Reply:i took pert in a trial for a prototype about ten years ago, but it needed removing and replacing every 6 months as the danger of power battery leakage was high. it did work up to 5 miles but was dropped due to the stress factor and duration time of power supply. as far as i know there has been no further advance since then.
Reply:LOL!!! i mean, thats in the news SO long ago... wads more, ALL pet dogs have one of those chips UNDER their skin nowadays...
Reply:Yes. Talk to your vet.
Reply:I know that there have been some trials with a gps type chip. One of the issues was the loss of signal when inside a building or enclosed area.
Reply:Why don't you tatoo your dogs along with the microchip.
Reply:i have not herd of the GPS chip but i have the micro chip i had my dog micro chipped but i have herd of the collar with the tracking try cabellas and/or foster and smith.com
Reply:Here in the parish that I live in (Louisiana) when you adopt a pet from the pound they insert the chip into the animal before they let you have it. I think it is a great idea and would love to have it for my dogs. (They also insert the chip in race horses already!)
Reply:YES!!! It's much more easier and simpler than a dog tag, because if someone wants to kidnap your precious pups, you can always do wat you need to do to track the chips and since you can't take these ones OFF, you'll know that you will be able to have a better chance of finding him or her whether they get lost, run away(though, they probably wouldn't), or get napped(hopefully that wouldn't happen either!)
