Could a bath cause skin problems?

I bathed my dog once with human shampoo just because I was out of the dog shampoo and I didn't realize it till he was already all wet in the tub and I picked up the bottle and it was empty and I really needed to bathe him cause I was having a party and I wanted him to smell good and I didn't have the time to go get some at that moments as I was expecting guests....about a week later I noticed that he started biting at the base of his tale and its starting to scab...could this be because of the one bath I gave him....its been about two weeks since then and I bought him some dog shampoo and bathed him in that....do you think that will help?? Or might it be something more serious?

Could a bath cause skin problems?
If it were an allergy, the itching would have started soon after you applied the shampoo. The more likely culprit is dryness. Get an oameal shampoo for dogs, and a really rich conditioning cream. Humans produce more oils in the hair than dogs do, so human shampoos are more drying than dog shampoos; and it takes longer to replenish those oils for a dog after bathing. If this doesn't help, you can also get a cortisone spray that will stop the itching in a flash. If THAT doesn't work, it may be that his anal glands need to be expressed. If your dog is rubbing his hney on the floor a lot, or his rear has a strong musky smell, take him to a professional groomer or your vet.
Reply:Your dog could have hot spots.
Reply:Most human shampoo isn't ph balanced for a dog, so yes, he could be reacting to the shampoo. Get a medicated shampoo (get one from the vet for this time, as he is already inflamed) and bathe him in it.

RINSE RINSE RINSE!!!! If you ever have to use human shampoo in an emergency, rinsing is critical!!
Reply:The human shampoo might have triggered the initial reaction, but at this point it's an allergic reaction and bathing him in dog shampoo alone is probably not enough by itself to stop it. A bath in oatmeal dog shampoo will help, but you probably need a trip to the vet too.
Reply:Try giving him another bath this time using a baby formula shampoo and a small amount of tea tree oil just where he is scabbing. Bathe him once every 6 weeks to avoid over drying the skin and use Ivory dish soap for the first go round to get rid of nasty dirt and grease and then the baby shampoo-when the water seems to roll off his back he is clean. Every other bath time use the tea tree oil all over rubbing it into his skin or a conditioner. You can also add Brewer's yeast to his food every day and that will help with any fleas and skin conditions as well. Use 1/4-1/2 teaspoon daily depending on his size.
Reply:Human shampoo will dry out a dogs skin and if you didn't totally rinse all the shampoo out it will cause irritation to the dogs skin. I think your giving your dog a bath too often also. If it's winter time where you are between the warm dry house air and all the baths your dog could not have really dry skin and she is biting because of it.

I keep a close eye on her skin and it it starts to get raw looking she has bitten her self a nice hot spot and should go to the vet for treatment.

Keep baths to a minimum in the winter months ok.
Reply:yes you should only use dog shampoo human shampoo is very harsh and oatmeal is best. because it helps hydrate the skin
