My West Highland Terrier has a terrible skin complaint.?

My dog has terrible skin complaint.

Antibiotics clear it up, with help of a medicated bath shampoo supllied by my vet. She also has kibble from James welbeloved .Shortly after the treatment the blisters are back back.. meaning another vet big bill.

She is 11 yrs old, and comes out in leaking blisters, she has a bad oudour. The spots irritate her and her once pink skin has black patches.

I know the problem will be never be cured, but has anyone found something that will ease her irritation or perhaps offer some advice.

I've seen alot of Westies with bad skin, but never like you describe. I wonder if you shouldn't get a second opinion from another vet. If you keep giving the same antibiotics they won't work. Could it be an allergy? Could she need steroid shots (prednisone)? Try to get a second opinion.
Reply:My poodle/papillon has the same problem. The vet said is is allergy related. No matter what I do it always returns. I also use a medicated shampoo once or twice a week. I take extra time spraying warm water over her back, which she loves. I also use an antibiotic cream. Another thing that helps her is brushing her gently, sort of to help her itch. On occasion I use Lanacane. I rub it gently on her. It does build up though and is only a quickie help. My girl is only 5 so I assume this is something I am going to have to go through for awhile. Can't your vet just give you a refill of the meds in between your yearly visits?
Reply:try a low protein diet ie skinners give only water to drink no treats or junk us humans eat if you must bathe her only very mild non scented shampoo tea tree and lavendar oil used carefully may help its also worth thinking of things she is exposed to ie tobacco smoke room fragrances carpet treatments and any sprays you may use around the house also denes health products may help
Reply:Oh, the poor thing!

I know you're getting her veterinary care but if you want some skin relief, you might want to try the pet itchy skin stuff that HealthyPetNet offers.

I was visiting with a friend this week and she had huge boils and rashes from something she'd gotten into. Mind you, she's a human friend, not a dog! All I had with me was some pet spray that I get mail order. The ingredients were all the holistic things you use on humans - chamomile, etc. - so we sprayed it on her.

It *immediately* cut the itching. Gone. Completely.

So I'd say, if it works that well on humans, then it probably really does work on the dogs.

I think you can check it out on the website below, click on the Animal side. You might also want to see if any of their foods are good for animals with allergies. I'm holistic, I always look to nutrition and food and water sources first when trying to solve something.
