Serious Dog Diet Question?

My miniature poodle who is 10 recently was put on a diet as he has skin problems and is slightly overweight. This is working splendidly and he is doing fine. However the food the vet gave us is EUKANUBA!!! We only realised after a few weeks that they are basically iams-and they test on animals and abuse them! :( I am very against animal abuse/testing and I do not want to support it by buying their products!

So my question is:What else can I feed him???

(It is Eukanuba Veterinary Diet, Nutritional Skin and Coat Formula and he has 2 cups a day)

Serious Dog Diet Question?
I am very glad you realised this. You can try one of these healthier foods.

Canidae all life's stages

Solid Gold

Wellness

Innova

Avo-Derm

Natrual Balance

Life's Abundance

These are all very healthy and are some of the best. Usually on the bag it will tell you how much to feed depending on the size and wieght. Good luck!
Reply:I feed my dog what I eat, Cheeseburgers, Pizza Etc.. no chocolate, which is bad for dogs.
Reply:My daughter uses Hill's Science Diet for sensitive skin on her dogs. They love it.

She used to be a vet assistant and this brand was recommended.

Good luck with your little doll baby dog.
Reply:Call your vet's office and explain to them what you just explained to us, I am sure they can provide you with the name for a different brand that is not cruel to animals. This world is slowly but surely changing thanks to people like you who care about innocent animals!
Reply:First, I switched my dogs off of Eukanuba a few years ago for dietary reasons but the animal testing/abuse claim about Iams is a fallacy perpetuated by PETA and has been disproven. So though there may be reasons to not feed Eukanuba, that's not one of them. All food companies do palatability testing on dogs (to see if dogs like the taste) in some form or another and Iams made clear that they were not abusing dogs.

For a dog with allergies (I have one) I like California Natural made by Natura (same company that makes Innova). I believe they make a reduced calorie version as well. This food is all human grade ingredients and my dogs are thriving on it, including the allergic one. They make a lamb version and a chicken version (my dog is allergic to lamb, so we use chicken).

Whenever I hear about the combination of itchy skin and overweight, I automatically consider hypothyroidism, especially in an older dog. It is very common. If you haven't already, get your dog a T-4 blood test and eliminate this possible cause. Getting my dog on thyroid medication made all the difference on his weight and it helped his itchy skin too.
Reply:No point paying for your vet if you aren't prepared to take his/her advice!

If you don't agree with the advice, go BACK to the vet, and discuss your concerns.

As it is, the animal testing was a good few years back, but keeps getting bandied about by people who don't know any better. Scaremongers - who MAINLY 'live' online!
Reply:just go to ur vet and ask them what other foods u can feed her. tell her that u know it isnt a very good food and want to feed something different. and see what else they reccomend
Reply:Your vet has the greater good of your dog in his heart, but it is probably to the detriment of your pocketbook!!!

Do some research!!! Cut the label from your Eukanuba and take it with you to a PetCo or Petsmart Store. Compare the ingedients in Eukanuba to the labels of other pet foods on the market. If you find a comparable, less expensive brand, buy it. Just make sure the ingredients match up.

I'm very lucky!!! I have cats (three) and they all eat Meow Mix Original. They love it. I was purchasing from PetCo, but it is about three dolars cheaper at Target. I do not like to flush money down the proverbial toilet, so I try to always buy it from Target.

You could even shop around at other than pet food stores!!!

Good luck and may God bless you.
Reply:Canidae all life stages is good for dogs with all kinds of special needs. It includes, chicken fat,(fatty acid source) flaxseed, herring,. to help skin. It also has rosemary extract which stimulates hair growth.

it ia very meat dense. no by products. it has real chicken, turkey, lamb, and herring,

the only reason vets reccomend cheap brands, is because vet students are ushually taught by Iams, Hill's, Purina..ect ect. all they ever hear about are those brands. Those stupid Hill's,Iams, and Purina people try and brainwash their students into thinking these foods are the best.
