English bulldog with severe skin problems, help!?

My bulldog is going crazy with skin rashes on his face and he can't stop scratching. He is spilling drops of blood everywhere. He eats Science Diet dog food, he takes a an Omega 3 and a benadryl everyday. Vets don't know.

Any other advice?

English bulldog with severe skin problems, help!?
Change vets. If the vets havent already I would recommend a skin scrape to check for parasites and mites. My dog started losing his hair about 6 months ago and they say its skin allergies. My dog is 44lbs and they said he could take 2 benadryl 3 times a day so that might help. Also we use cortisone cream on my dog to make him stop itching it usually helps. As for the bleeding... Most dogs wont let you hold a compress to make it stop. You can try to let it stop on its own but if its like my dog they continue to mess with it till there is blood everywhere. You can buy stuff from the pet store call parvex that is an ointment they use on sled dogs paws when they get chapped it works well to stop bleeding. Another safe alternative is pack the place that is bleeding with triple anti biotic ointment. It doesnt harm the dog at all and its what my vet recommends. Again try another vets opinion maybe they can run more tests. My dog was put on prednizone which helped a ton and only takes it when needed now so its not to bad.
Reply:benadryl is probably making it worse
Reply:Some dogs have an allergic reaction to corn. I know Science Diet is suppose to be good...but check to see it it has corn or corn meal in the first 3 ingredients....they use a lot of corn. Dogs have reactions to different things in the air just like humans...so depending on where you are..and whats in the air could be what is triggering it. Check to see if things have changed lately in the mold, pollen, or fungus count. Have another vet check him as someone else has recommended...he could have a parasite or mange. Bath him good and don't use any kind of rinse or conditioner...just rinse him good with clear water.

Good luck...I hope the poor fellow gets better soon.
Reply:Most skin rashes and erruptions come from a food allergy or an allergic reaction to polluted environments caused by things such as harsh chemicals used in cleaning products, drycleaning processes, and pest control. My advice is to go out the first chance you can and get a book about Natural Health for Dogs %26amp; Cats by Dr. Pitcarin. It is a wonderful book to reference for any and all things related to your pet. It contains food recipes that you can make for your dog and homeopathic remedies for allergies. Try to switch your home to as chemical free as you can. Use natural cleaning products and try to hire eco-friendly pest control.
Reply:Many ingrediants in commercial dog food can cause allergies in your dog. Even premium foods. Someone mentioned corn based food which is a possibility. I have a dog that is allergic to wheat! You might want to try a chicken and rice based food and experiment until you find one that seems to help. I would definitely seek out a Vet who specializes in allgergies. Seeing a specialist could be on the expensive side but it might save both you and your dog a lot of aggrevation.

I also have one other suggestion. Talk to people who have dealt with this problem before; bulldog breeders. Right here on Yahoo Groups; you may be able to find a group that deals exclusively with English Bulldogs. I know they have a group for Bull Terriers, they may have one for the bulldog. Find such a group and you will find breeders willing to share their knowledge and information from a hands on perspective. You may also want to Google sites like "skin allergies in dogs"; or something to that effect.

There is a lot of expert advice out there, the trick is finding the source. Good luck.
Reply:Check with another vet. The benadryl could be making it worse since it has dyes in it.

Just a thought....could it possibly be fleas? I dont know if you have him treated or not but try a flean dip and then give him a treatment.
Reply:Hah! Vets know, they just don't want to admit it- it's the food. Vets get paid off to sell Science Diet, and it's CRAP! Throw that stuff out immediately. Try Innova Evo, or California Natural Herring %26amp; Sweet Potato- both excellent, all natural, low allergen diets. If you're really dedicated, look up information the the raw/barf diet- also great for allergies, but more time consuming.
