Do Yorkies have dry skin or skin problems?

My dog doesn't have fleas that I can see but always scratches, sometimes gets sores from the scratching. A couple of people have said that the breed is known for some type of dry skin but no one can tell me what to treat it with. Any one know? I know I will call a vet. Don't tell me that I just wanted to see what you all had to say.

I have 2 yorkies and they sometimes get dry skin. My vet told me to use this pump liquid that you put on there food called 3V Caps. check with you vet or online pet stores, it is good for their dry skin and also makes their hair healthier
Reply:Any dog can get dry skin, particularly in the winter. Give your dog about 1 tsp. of veg. oil on her food daily, or even better, salmon oil. Also, be careful not to bath often especially in the winter or you'll strip all the oils out of her coat and skin.
Reply:A lot of the times young puppies have a certian kind of fur mite that actually will bit the skin just like a flea. They are to small to see, but will cause the puppy to itch and cause flaky skin. This can be treated with a dipping at your groomer as long as the puppy is older than 12 weeks old. Good luck.
Reply:The can, but it may just be because of the weather. I would give her a bath with a high quality oatmeal shampoo for dogs and cool water. Just be sure to let it set for 10-15 minutes. Also, if you are using human shampoo on her you need to switch her to a dog formula, human shampoos can cause dryness or make dryness worse.





I use Desert Sudz from ryanspet.com. I think that is works great and it is not very expensive. The oatmeal formulas really help dry skin.





You can also try putting it on an omega fatty acid supplement. They help quite a bit.
Reply:If you know that your pet's scratching is due to dry skin and nothing else, then try a good moisturizing shampoo like AvoDerm Skin and Coat Shampoo.





If your dog is scratching until she starts to bleed, I think it is best to take her into the vet (not something you wanted to read, I know).
