Is another dog a good idea?

I have a 11 month old dog called patch he is a cross between a jack russel and a cocker spaniel. He was brought up with our other dog sammy (they are both male) they got on really well but would fall out at times cause sammy is old and patch was a bit much at times. Anyway me and my fiance moved in together and patch is a bit more naughty now nothing really bad but more naughty. I really want another dog, partly because I think patch misses the company of sammy. Patch hasnt been castrated yet but will be soon. Do you think we should get another one, if so is male or female better? He gets on well with my friends female boarder collie (and she hates other dogs usually)they love running round lots. We sort of rescued patch he wasnt very well looked after and had skin problems and was under fed. He is now very happy but we feel he is lonely. Any advice please

Is another dog a good idea?
After your dog is fixed and has recovered, and rested fully, and is back to "normal" another dog can actually help correct some unwated behaviors in your current dog. everyone tends to "humanize" dogs, and forget that they were born into a pack and that they are a dog.(dog in a good way folks)

Within a pack a male is always a leader over females so a female dog would be a better choice. remember that this new puppy will not be fixed untill about 5 months later so you dont want one male giving off a stronger urine scent while your current dog can no longer do that after being fixed.

so get your self a female that has about the same traits as yours, or calmer, not more hyper.

When introducing the new dog you should first put your dog out where he does not see your new puppy. let the new puppy smell the home (meets the male by smell)'

When you introduce your female, her butt should be to his nose. Never eye to eye. let him sniff her but, then see if he will let her sniff him.

then set her down and gently supervise.

good luck!
Reply:Get him neutered first. You'll be surprised how that can change behavior.
Reply:Oh my yes! I checked with my pup and he confirms my long held belief that every dog needs a dog...or two! It can be male or female, just be sure to get either one fixed. Nothing happier than dogs playing with dogs! go for it!
Reply:Getting Patch neutered is a really good idea, especially for his health. Generally it's a better idea to have 1 dog of each sex - they tend to get on better than 2 males or 2 females would. Since he's used to having another dog for company, he likely is lonely and would appreciate a new playmate.
Reply:If you have one naughty dog, you should never add a second until you correct the problems with the first... Or else you'll end up with 2 naughty dogs.
Reply:its OK them playing with other dogs in open areas but bring one into their territory and things may change

I've done the two dog thing and had to separate them - fighting
Reply:Hi,

There is no yes/no answer to your question: it depends on you and Patch.

You already know that you want another dog. You now have to know whether Patch really wants another doggy in the house.

Why don't you try try him with other dog first? Dog-sit for your friends, walk him with other dogs, take him to a rescue centre and see if he likes other big/small dogs ....

Also, if you want to get him neutered, the do that first.

Best wishes

Reply:i have a chihuahua and we had a jack Russel and our house cleaning lady let him out and well lets just say the outcome was not good anyway my chihuahua was heartbroken lookin everywhere for him, so we got a another dog and he is just the happyest little thing ever they are best friends also the Chihuahua is a male and the other is a female i would get a female if you have a male the get along better and also get him neutered
Reply:It can be good for a dog to have a playmate, it would keep him company and help him burn off excess energy. Mainly it is up to you and your fiance to decide if you want another dog and the extra care that goes with it. The sex probably doesn't matter as much as just making sure that the dogs are compatible. Having another dog to play with when you can't play with him may help to keep him from becoming bored and finding mischief to get into.
Reply:Yes. But be cautious when you introduce a new "friend" to

Patch.Patch will be no threat if he is castrated so boy or girl

would be o.k..
Reply:We've always had at least two dogs, because they are company for each other. They are less likely to get bored and start doing things like chewing. And dogs are social animals, they like living in a pack.

Just be sure your new dog is going to be compatible with Patch. It would be best to have Patch neutered first, and it doesn't matter whether it is a male or female, as long as they like each other.
Reply:Getting another dog could be a good idea. It will definitely help your dog to deal with losing his friend. However, I do believe that if you do get another dog you should get him neutered if you decide to get a female. My dog Thor died when my dog Pumpkin was only a few months old. My dog Layla helped Pumpkin get over it. Now my year old dog Njord is helping Pumpkin (now almost 8) get over Layla passing away. Maybe you could go to a local shelter and try to find a dog that matches Patch's personality so that they will get along. Then not only will you be helping your dog, you'll help a dog that needs a loving home.
Reply:Try to get a ***** around the same age if you can, or a puppy.
Reply:Well i think that you should have him castrated to get him to calm down and then go from there.
Reply:Get him castrated and see how he calms down. He may be much happier and not need another playmate.
Reply:no but an everlasting light bulb is
