Puppy has skin problems-very dry-scratches all the time and smells?

Rescued puppy from starvation and eventually death. Was covered in fleas-finally got rid of them! But she still has patches with no hair and is constantly scrathing. Don't want to bathe her too much for fear of making it worse. Have tried "oatmeal" shampoo made for dogs. At a loss at this point - poor little thing. She eats well(little piggy),wags her tail alot, loves to play with my other dog, overall appears to be happy and healthy, other than her skin. HELP PLEASE.

Try changing her diet.Sometimes the kind of food a dog eats affects their skin.
Reply:Oh my god take your puppy to the vet!!!
Reply:Add vitamin e to her diet. Take her to the vet.
Reply:Try calling a Vet.
Reply:Hmm.. I'd maybe check with your vet. You've done all the things I could think of. It might take some time too for the skin to heal. I'd try something for conditioner that has some lotion in it.
Reply:She has Sarcoptic Mange. You need to take her to the vet, thats the only way you will get rid of it. Good Luck and that was nice of you to save the puppy :)
Reply:Rub Your Puppy in baby every other day with baby oil.feed it a raw egg for the protien once or twice a week. Good Luck with your puppy.
Reply:It sounds like she might have, Mange.

Reply:Dogs and cats can be allergic to the fleas which bite them, your local vet will prescribe something for that, usually a shot , but sometimes creams . The bare patches are caused from the scratching I would think.
Reply:The first order of business would be to have her examined by your local vet. They can rule in and out alot of things. I would say that a skin scraping would be in order first to rule out any type of mange mites. If it is mange mites, there are appropriate medications that can be administered along with bathing routines that generally have a good success rate. If this test turns out negative, it may be something seasonal or food allergies which would warrant possible injections of steroids, depo-medrol and other helpful medicines. Fleas of course can cause a reaction from their bite/saliva in some pets, and can create a very major skin problem which can be controlled and hopefully eliminated. I am sorry that there is not a quick fix for your problem, but taking the pet in for an evaluation is something that would be my first priority as you would get more specifics and how to deal and treat the pet-instead of guessing and still having the problem.

Hats off to you for your rescue and hope she gives you many years of happiness. Good Luck!
Reply:Poor thing. Good on you for rescuing her. I would definitely get her in to the vet asap to have her looked at and maybe they can suggest something that will work. Plus she will need her vaccines if she isn't already up to date, which is not likely something anyone cared about if she was being abused.
Reply:Hi ....besides the bathing in oatmeal puppy shampoo akso try feeding your newest baby Lamb and rice based dog food. I f that doesn't help you may want to seek out a PetsMart if near by they should have someone there than can further assist you in that area. Hope this helps
Reply:Your dog has classic signs of being fed the wrong food. There is a lot of food sold for dogs that is just plain junk, and composed of ingredients (like corn) that are actually harmful to many succeptible dogs. Switch to Max Dog Food (Nutro-Max) and get the adult formula. Buy the bag for adult dogs, not senior dogs, not puppies. This should cure your problems. Take a good look at your dog's coat, weight, bowel habits, stools, amount of gas she is passing, and the general look of her face. Remember all these things. Then take another look after she has been on Max Adult formula for about two weeks. I think you will see a big change for the better

Also, don't listen to the Pet Shop sales clerk. Some of them are well-informed. Some of them are idiots. Get Nutro-Max Adult Dog Food. Nothing else.

Good luck with your dog. She was lucky to find you.
Reply:I am not a vet, but I did some research on the signs and symptoms, I did find some things

Seborrhea

How can I tell if my pet has seborrhea

Some flakiness is normal, especially in some young puppies. However if your dog has excessive scaliness, it may be a sign of seborrhea. In some cases, the hair will feel greasy and have a distinctive odor. The skin may or may not appear red. In some cases, the ears may be inflamed and have excess secretions. You may see your dog scratching and licking more. If you suspect your pet has seborrhea, he should be seen by a veterinarian. Your veterinarian will want to know your observations.

He could also have a secondary infection from the fleas that he had,

I would see a veterinarian. They can do a skin scrapping and rule out this like mites and mange, it is hard to say what it is online and like me most people will research a question for the answer. So just to be safe, I world go to the vet. If you would like to do a little research on your own try http://www.peteducation.com
