Whats the best dog food?

I have an 8yr old goldenretrivermix and a 3yrold pit they both have skin problems

Whats the best dog food?
They are mmost likely allergic to something in the food you are using. Try brands like Natura, Merrick, Natural Balance, Canidae, Solid Gold, or Eagle. Look for these brands at the smaller locally owned pet food stores(sometimes called boutiques) They will help you decide what food to try. (most of the time they will even send you home with samples for the dogs to try) Big name foods like purina brands are full of corn and wheat which most dogs develop allergies to. Quality foods will have complex protiens like meat or fish as the very first ingredient. Don't be fooled because it's a big name. Better foods are a little more expensive, but your dog will eat less because the food is more balanced.
Reply:pedigree it has vitamins
Reply:don't get canned dag food because the hard stuff is good for their teeth.
Reply:prescription canine u/d
Reply:PURINA THROUGH YAHOO PETS

I'VE ALLWAYS BEEN WITH PURINA WITH ALL LIVESTOCK AND DOG CHOW EVEN THE CAT IS ON FRISKIES

CHECK IN TO PURINA AND SEE WHY THEY HAVE BEEN IN BUISNESS SO LONG
Reply:pedigree b/c it has vitamans
Reply:Purina
Reply:Iams
Reply:it depends on the dog
Reply:Purina or Pedigree
Reply:Have you tried IAMS? ONE is also good.
Reply:Pedigree,Iams,Kibbles and Bits,Purina,
Reply:Iams all the way. Top of the line stuff. Purina and the rest are good but not top grade.
Reply:I breed Shar Pei's and they are susceptible to skin disease. I have used Iams eukanuba for the last 15 years and found it to be the best for my dogs. Do try it.
Reply:Anything that is natural. Don't feed your pets commercial food, it will give them terrible health problems when they start getting older.
Reply:well, most foods mentioned here will probably make things worse. IMO, no dog should be fed anything you can buy at a grocery store.

One person recommended things like merrick, etc. My boy has skin, food, and airborne allergies. He is fed the highest quality food possible. But it can also break my budget.

So, try something like Natural balance, chicken soup for the pet lover's soul, cannidae, or nutro.

These range in prices, but most arent too expensive. Also, try a supplement. NuPro is a GREAT one. we have all 4 of our dogs on it, and they do great. I think you can buy this online, or at a lot of pet food stores. It will most likely help with the skin issues.

Also, try herbal shampoos, or oatmeal ones targeted for skin allergies, sensitive skin, or dry skin.

also, 2 of our dogs are pits, and one is a boxer. they are on nutro, as feeding FOUR dogs the highest quality kibble can really leave you broke. But, once they were put on that they did really well. They also did well on Evolve and the Canidae I mentioned trying too.

Good luck!
Reply:For skin problems: Eukanuba

I don't remember the name of it,

but it has omega fatty acids and fish oils to enhance skin and coat. It's supposed to be one of the best on the market

and you will not have to give any other OTC or prescribed meds...unless it's a medical condition causing skin problems
Reply:Stay away from any food they sell at Wal-Mart or the grocery store.Contrary to popular belief Purina,Alpo,Iams etc,are not the best food for your dog. They are simply the companies that sink millions and millions into advertising to make you think they are.All those foods use either animal byproducts, corn, soy,or other useless fillers. They use them because they are cheap to buy,and make your dog feel full.

Those ingredients are approved for use in dog food, but that don't mean they are the best ingredients to use.Try to find a premium food like Innova or Canidae, both are excellent foods, with no cheap to buy, useless fillers. If you can not find one of those foods, read the labels, find a food with the least amount of corn,byproducts,chemicals,etc.... sure the main source(first ingredient)of protein is ether Chicken,or chicken meal, never chicken byproducts.Other meats are also fine as long as it's the meat or meal, and not a byproduct. The better the ingredients the better the health of your dog will be.Premium foods also help do away with dry skin, excess shedding and dull looking fur.

A premium food will cost more per bag,but in the long run is about the same as cheaper brands.A premium food does not require as much be fed, because more of it is digested as nutrients, and not expelled as waste.

Innova and Canidae are two of the best foods available.

Innova

Turkey,Chicken,Chicken Meal,Ground Barley,Ground Brown Rice,Potatoes,Natural Flavors,Chicken Fat,Herring,Apples,Carrots,Cot... Cheese.

Canidae

Chicken Meal, Turkey Meal, Brown Rice, White Rice, Lamb Meal, Chicken Fat (preserved with Mixed Tocopherols), Herring Meal, Flax Seed, Sun Cured Alfalfa Meal, Sunflower Oil, Chicken.

The main thing to remember since your dogs have skin problems is to avoid any food that contains byproducts, corn, soy, and wheat, they are the most likely reason for food related problems.Iams,Eukanuba,Purina, they all use some,or all of those things.
