My dog has a allergy to grass ie (Hay fever)?

I have a four yr old male staffordshire bull and he has been suffering with this problem since he was about 2, every spring/summer time he suffers with very itch skin, small lumps on his back and a red itchy ear, and everytime he starts to get symptoms i rush him straight down to the vets pay my £50 and pump him full of tablets and ear drops issued by the vet, the vet has told me that he is allergic to grass and pollen, but i dont want to keep pumping him full off drugs, because its no good for him, and i dont want him to suffer so what should i do???? i would like to take him to a proper clinc where they dog skin specialists, but i dont know of any in staffordshire. Please send in ideas to keep his hay fever down or to tell me where there is a clinc thanks!!

Your poor dog, it must be so horrible for him.

Unfortunately unless you take him to a skin specialist there's very little you can do. I assume you don't want to keep your dog inside all Spring/Summer? However, a once off visit to a skin specialist should help and provide you with some ideas as to how to make your dog more comfortable. Maybe he/she can give you some natural remedies. I admire you not to keep pumping your dog full of medication. It does affect their quality of life.

A friend of mine has a German Shepherd/Collie mix who has a skin allergy to dust. She was broke and upset at all the medication she was having to pump into her dog. She saw a skin specialist a few weeks ago (who came to her hometown.....as far as I know they do that) who gave her alternatives to the medication. Three weeks later and her dog is hugely improved! It's worth a phone call at least, and if not maybe a trip to one of those natural remedy shops? Not sure if they have anything suitable for dogs, but at least you will have explored your options before deciding what's best for you and your dog.

I hope things work out for the best. Good luck, and give your poor doggy a cuddle for me.

Reply:Probably try to keep the dog inside most of the time.
Reply:I have a rescue lurcher which had exactly same as your dog, I got tablets from vet as well but when I checked ingredients of tablets I found they were exactly same as Asda Hay fever %26amp; Allergy relief (non drowsy), I now give him 1 a day and he has been fine, it is only 89 pence for 7 tablets and he has been getting them for a month now. It is worth a try, good luck

Many times dogs get allergies because they are not getting the appropriate nutrition from their diets. This causes them to have a weakened immune system. So, first start off by feeding your dog an appropriate diet, and strengthening his immune system. After a couple of months on an appropriate diet, see if his allergies improve.

Good luck.
Reply:i used to have a staffie, and every year the same would happen,i wud take her to the vets, her skin would be red raw on her back near her tail, she wud sit at the bottom stair, and rub it,it never stopped once it started(every year i mean) and now,my new dog(well, not new)but my other dog has started the same....i think its just very common...like normal hay fever...its just more expensive.
Reply:Then dont let your dog much outside, you can train him inside so he wont go outside.
