Some pigmentation is normal especially if he's got or had a skin infection, which he will have on and off for the rest of his life (westies are predisposed to dermatitis). If his skin is healing now then leave it alone, DO NOT apply anything unless prescribed by the vet as this may set his irritation off again. It could be related to adolescence but get your vet to check it on his next visit as nobody on a forum can diagnose it without 1st seeing him
Reply:Suntan!
Reply:My westie has always had very dark skin. In some places it's black. I know that it may seem unusual but I am pretty sure the dark coloration is normal. Have fun with your westie.
Reply:my 6 month old westies skin is going grey too all over and even darker around his bits.
Reply:Dogs especially with white coats tends to develope dark gray or sometimes black spots on their skin as they age. It is normal and ok. A way to help hide is to buy special Whitening shampoo. I groom dogs everyday and I LOVE whitening on white dogs (Im assuming he's white since hes a westie) . It is usually purple, and you leave it on the dogs for 5-10 minuets, then wash it off, and you cant tell at first but when the dog drys it is so much whiter than before. plus if you use this shampoo on a regular basis it will help maintane the coats whiteness and helps hide the dark skin underneath.

Oh and for the future, your dog MAY get tear stains. white dogs usually as they get older start leaving these red stains under their eyes, or they lick their paws and stain them red a little, or around their mouth. To get these out hydrogen peroxide is a good thing, dont get it in their eyes but using a cotton ball just everyday wipe the red stains or any stains they might get on their coat and the hydrogen peroxide usually after repeated use will help a lot.
Reply:I have 2 westies, one boy and one girl, one has dark skin the other very pink skin, I wouldn't worry to much, have fun with him
